Very good/good:

Retreat
Kill List
The Loved Ones
The Pact

Mediocre:

ATM
Three Extremes
The Theatre Bizzare

Horrible ones (some I turned off 5 minutes in)

I'll add Playback to the list. Horror, IIRC. Also horrible, which I remember well. VHS was garbage. ATM was probably more funny to me because who parks that far away from the building in a snowstorm?

Kill List

I liked it, but I'm still not sure that I understood the ending.

Very creepy.
I watched this last night and I must say that for a low budget horror, it was done very well

Casper Van Dien really had very little screen time, guess they just needed a name, even if it was just CVD

Agreed on that. Looking at a list of horror movies from Wiki, I'll add these (some of which may not be straight up "horror," but similar)...all from 2006 or after that I've liked:

- Cabin in the Woods (horror/satire/dark comedy)
- The Possession (usually movies like this struggle to end - like The Devil Inside or The Last Exorcism - but this one did a solid job)
- The Woman in Black (surprisingly solid)
- Grave Encounters
- The Crazies
- Human Centipede (though arguably not horror)
- Pandorum (some hate it, but I liked it)
- Triangle
- Zombieland (more comedy than horror, but still..)
- Contagion (not horror but scary in its own right)
- Cloverfield (I liked it)
- Quarantine
- The Strangers
- The Mist
- 30 Days of Night
- 28 days Later
- Buried (not really horror)
- I Am Legend
- The Hills Have Eyes
- Paranormal Activity (just the first one though, and if you haven't seen a trailer, don't watch one because it ruins the end)
- The Poughkeepsie Tapes
- The Covenant

my friend (a huge starship troopers fan) nearly lost his shite when CVD started following him on Twitter

I think you will like it.

maintains a lot of suspense throughout and doesn't ruin it by going all Insidius on you at the end

Which 12? I'll rank the remaining ones that you haven't seen..

And I may check out The Pact soon. Trying to decide if I want to buy it or try to watch it online..

Can you fill me in on this one? The famous gif from this movie has always freaked me out and the premise sounds pretty creepy

On Netflix instant:

(mostly from 2011)

Black Death - Ned Stark and Lady Melisandre for GoT nerds

Absentia - low budget, but high in creepy

Lovely Molly - also low budget, but high in creepy

The InnKeepers - nothing too special, but I liked looking at Sara Paxton, though she's not as hot as Caity Lotz in the Pact.

The Bleeding House - fairly decent, different plot

The New Daughter - again low budget, high in creepy
