I know im in the minority but im not to crazy about BE I can understand how people like it and I can tell its well made. I just couldn't get into it. Game of thrones is going to be absolutely mind blowing these next two seasons

Lots of potential to end up among the above: Boardwalk Empire

By no means "best", but Sex & the City is the one I watched the most. I've probably seen every episode at least twice.

Band of Brothers but Game of Thrones could be better if they stick with the books and don't frick it up

The Wire by a lot. The Sopranos is the most over rated TV show since MASH. It was good, but nothing spectacular.

Band of Brothers
I'm seeing a lot of votes for Band of Brothers. I will say it's the greatest miniseries ever made, but is it really fair to compare it to shows that have 40+ episodes? I think it's a separate category.

If anything I see it not being fair to the miniseries as they didnt have as much time to develop story lines or characters. The fact they are getting votes along with the likes of the sopranos which went on for like 80 episodes just proves to me how great BoB, Generation Kill and The Pacific are.

Possibly, but it's harder to maintain viewer interest and balance long story arcs involving so many characters over a long period of time versus a short miniseries. Are you going to put BOB up against the best season of The Wire, or The Sopranos, or Deadwood? Well, that wouldn't be fair either since the longer series had longer storylines to play out that couldn't be contained as one so they lack the resolution and "coming full circle" of the miniseries. On the other hand, it gives the longer series the luxury of cherry-picking from a larger sample size. How do those advantages and disadvantages balance out?

I'd rather just not compare them, but I say it's a greater achievement to put together a great series than a great miniseries.

Its based off a book a journalist wrote about being embedded in the 1st marine division during the invasion of Iraq. Just a great great miniseries IMO. It's hard to call it better than BoB or The Pacific but its a phenomenal series and I enjoyed it more. Go check it out on HboGo when you get a chance. You wont regret it.

ETA: Jahmohn I see your point, but my main motive for starting this thread was to pick up a new show that I may have not seen before

It has served its purpose and provided great discussion

The Sopranos and nothing else comes close. Each episode of the Sopranos was like a mini movie. Everything from casting to the acting was 5 star. Just an awesome show. Even the seasons/episodes that folks were complaining about were head and shoulders better than any other series I've seen.

God I miss that show.

I don't know about all time but HBO has killed it in this area. I have thoroughly enjoyed the following...

Boardwalk Empire****
The Pacific
Game of Thrones*****
The Wire

The two with asterisks are going to be FREAKING AMAZING once they are done.

Anyone ever watch Carnival? It was on for a very short time and it really caught my interest at the time. I guess I was the only one watching it but it was a crazy premise...
