What in your opinion are the best feature film directorial debuts? I’ll start with the obvious picks
1. Citizen Kane (Orson Welles)
2. Reservoir Dogs (Tarantino)
3. Blood Simple (Coen Brothers)

I don't really care that much for this film as a film. But it is of great historical significance and was enormously influential:

What Shadows was to film acting, The Little Fugitive was to independent filmmaking. It was the first indie film to go into the streets and capture life as it was happening (thanks to new lightweight cameras). Truffaut cited it as a major influence on the French New Wave.

Elevator to the Gallows
The 400 Blows
I was going to also include Badlands, but someone's already listed it.

In that vein, Ed Burns’ The Brothers McMullen and Kevin Smith’s Clerks.

I was going to say this but looking at his Wikipedia it apparently is not his feature debut.

I haven't seen it, but Hard Eight received great reviews for a 26 year old Paul Thomas Anderson. Crazy to think a year later he made Boogie Nights.

Technically that is correct. And Reservoir Dogs isn’t Tarantino’s feature debut either. However, Tarantino’s budget was $5k in 1987 and Chazelle’s was $60k in 2009 for their “debuts”

What did Tarantino direct in 1987?
