What's the best film adaptation of a book you've read?
One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest
LOTR trilogy
The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (original Swedish adaptation)
Fight Club
Saving #5 spot for World War Z, hopefully it measures up.

I just can't see it. Think they'd be better off with a series.

Deliverance
The Right Stuff

Didn't they just do a bunch of re-shoots? Never a good sign.

Agreed. A 12 episode mini-series would be perfect but I'm still optimistic about the film.

World Z is not gonna follow the book. I'm the movie the journalist is doing the interviews during the Zombie War so that he can save it.
Anyway. While a lot of those movies y'all have list are mainly good movie but don't really stay true to the book.
The truest book to movie is Holes. When Shia was still had the Louis Stevens looks.

The Godfather, though I actually liked the book better.

Don't know if this counts, but Watchmen. The only difference between the graphic novel and the film was a slight change in how the ending happended, and the film ending is better than the GN.

I know the book isn't very good but Interview with a Vampire.
Also, the Killer Angels - Gettysburg. I had to read Killer Angels for American History class in college and a lot of the dialogue in the movie was word for word from the book.

quote:Of the books that I've read and also seen the movie than I'd say this easily. The book was good but the movie was epic. The writing in the film itself was much wittier/powerful than in book IMO. Most of the best lines in the movie weren't in the book. And Brad Pitt was the embodiment of Tyler Durden. Definitely born to play the role.
Fight Club

A good adaptation does not necessarily have to be 100% faithful to the source material. Book to film adaptations require at least a minimal amount of digression, otherwise it would never translate well.
If you want a faithful book to movie adaptation watch anything put out by PBS/BBC. While excellent, they are also drawn out and lackluster.

This might be the best combination of both...best book/best movie rated as a whole.

If we're talking the best movies made from crappy books, then the answer is Last of the Mohicans.

If the criteria is how good the movie is, and not necessarily how true it is to the book, then I'd go with either Wizard of Oz, or Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (the Gene Wilder one).
Both deviate significantly from their source material, but I think both are way better than their books.
For adherenece to the source material, I'd have to go with Watchmen.

Some good ones mentioned but I'm going to TV for two of my favorites.
Lonesome Dove
Generation Kill
Gone With The Wind never seems to get any love in these threads but it follows the book pretty closely and Scarlet's journey from spoiled brat to ruthless modern businesswoman is the story of America.
