Well put but I don’t think it was meant to be a lighthearted doc. It was obvious by the way it was presented that the filmmakers had an agenda and I’m 100% on board with that agenda and I’m glad they presented it the way they did. The phenomenon boils down to a sense of community and even celebrity (in Mark Sargent’s case and many of the other big names). Without this idea and belief to bring them together they become social outcasts again which is why they cling to the belief so tightly. Imo that’s how they should be viewed in society going forward.

I saw it. It was good. To me it is indicative of what's going on in a number of different areas. The absurdity of a group of people rationalizing that the Earth is flat and coming up with empirical proof points is no different a group of people rationalizing that there are 93 different genders, or that they are victims of an orchestrated tyranical evil patriarchy, or that super predators are pouring over the border or whatever. As human beings, we construct our realities and then use "data" to justify what we have already decided to believe based on the identity we create for ourselves. Gay people are going to generate proof that raising children in a gay marriage is healthy. Pro choicers are going to generate proof that terminating a life is not murder. Climate changers are going to generate proof that mankind is causing irreversible harm to the environment...so on and so forth. It's the same pattern repeating itself. That's what the movie is about.

A very well done documentary. My favorite part was the 20,000 grand gyroscope arc

There's legit argument they were paid shills to make all theorists look crazy - mostly right wing people and those that question the government...
To easily dismiss real concerns by lumping them in with fake crazies.
Oh you believe that JFK was an inside job? You're a flat-earther!
You believe Hillary betrayed her country? You're a flat-earther!
And once they got a few youtube videos, dumbos latched onto these actors YouTube accounts and the movement grew.
All signs point to the flat-earth movement starting out as a false flag. And then growing hilariously because if people see it on YouTube, they think it's real.
Even the guy they have on this documentary doesn't seem real. He believes every Conspiracy ever?
Almost seems like a mockumentary.
Again, to discredit anybody who questions government/news/political Orthodoxy.
I've heard the Young Turks and MSNBC dismiss people who questioned Hillary during the election, questioned public shootings or about Planned Parenthood selling baby parts...
And their response was always, "oh, well they're a flat-earthers."
It became a political tool. If you dared question anything beyond the news/official narrative, you were a flat-earther.

this is fascinating. and, as baloo put it, is a really interesting study of our current climate where people literally argue proven facts. and, as already stated in this thread, boils down to wanting to belong/wanting to be a member of a community
its definitely not lighthearted and i think it does a good job at driving home how dangerous stuff like this really is to society and how, in many ways, its already starting to ruin it

I disagree, in that it definitely is lighthearted AND dangerous. It can be both.
The most fascinating thing to me was the whole "once you're in, you're in" aspect of it. Mark Sargeant even said at one point that he was so deep into it that he couldn't back out even if he found something that completely changed his belief. He (and some of the others) are literally addicted to the attention garnered by their status within that community.
What surprised me was the infighting though. I had no idea there were different "factions" within the flat earth society that disagreed, fundamentally, with each other about the specifics of flat earth to the point where they almost don't believe the same things. And that one dude who truly hated that Sargeant was basically the "star" and he was not. That was great.
Also loved, of course, the reactions of the "scientists" performing the experiments when finding proof that the earth was not flat. They either ignored the results or altered their hypotheses to fit the narrative. Oh, the gyroscope showed a 15 degree spin? Well that isn't the earth spinning, that's the sky spinning.
I will also admit that those pieces that the one dude was making from scratch (the little models of flat earths) were pretty awesome looking and I kinda want one now.
So while I do think it was fairly lighthearted, at the same time I recognize that these people are inhenrently dangerous and show the potential of gullibility within society. I mean, they literally were ignoring hardcore, factual evidence in order to continue living in ignorance.
The light experiment at the end was great.

I enjoyed it. Especially the first 15 or 20 minutes. Just about the time you’re thinking “hey, this is an actual impartial doc on these crazy mofos” and then he makes it clear he is making fun of them.

wait, this flat earth stuff is real?
i always thought it was like fun sarcasm club or something.
you know like people who belong to Jedi groups or dress as superheroes and not people that actually believed it.
