I was really hopeful for this, damn it. Without the creators involved I have very little hope. I’d be fine if they scrapped the project as well.

The live action film that M Shymalan made was a steaming pile of hot shite. One of the worst movies I have ever watched imo.

With the creators basically having nothing to do with this new live-action series, there is a slim chance that I ever even give this a shot.

Sure, the firebenders were hell bent on world domination and wiped out an entire tribe, but the characters virtually all seem like straight white characters, which is a welcomed departured from forced Woke culture.

Literally no one on the show is supposed to be white lol. They are all based on Asian descent.

Yep. Unless I missed something in the three times I've watched the entire series. Even the Inuits, though we have a healthy population of them in Alaska and parts of Canada, are basically as Asian as you can get.

Claiming ATLA would be "woke" if they cast Asian actors for a live action show would be like claiming Anne of Green Gables is "woke" for casting white people.

I am sorry to hear the creative minds behind the cartoon won't be working on the show. I have real doubts about someone else pulling this off and not having it be a complete disaster.

It honestly wouldn’t shock me if 1 of 2 or both of these happened:

1) In order to promote diversity, they need black people (and maybe even white people) on the cast, which Mike and Bryan would rightfully refuse given the series was largely based on the Second Sino-Japanese War.

2) Netflix wanted this to be the next Game of Thrones/Star Wars and didn’t want to piss off the Chinese government, so they wanted to force them to change key parts of the Earth Kingdom (where half the villains are from) to make them default good guy country. If this is the case, I hope Mike and Bryan took a massive shite on the Netflix executives desks on the way out. A significant portion of that show was implicitly defending the Chinese people while saying their government was morally equivalent to the genocidal imperialism of the Japanese and Nazis. They would rightfully leave the negotiations in outrage if the Netflix executives were remotely concerned with the opinions of the CCP.

Possibly going all Red Dawn remake on it and turning the Earth Kingdom into Koreans.

I don’t see how. Are they going to do away with Ba Sing Se? There’s a specific city known for its walls and it’s ring cast system. Having lived in Beijing for 3 years, it’s going to be very hard to do that plot without referencing the city. Korea is very, very different from the Earth Kingdom in the show. That’s just the destruction of the universe as a whole if so.

Yeah the entire reason for Ba Sing Se still standing was because of it's walls.

Replacing the walls with say a DMZ line would be incredibly dumb

Plus Ba Sing Se in Mandarin means “the Impenetrable City”. They’ll have to rename it as well if they are even going to suggest that it falls to the country inspired by the Japanese.

Forget the rest of the series. Just focus on this.

Netflix isn’t currently in China. LINK I’m not saying they don’t want to be, but rampant piracy seems to be as big of a concern as the Chinese government. Netflix is the one blocking Chinese access to their service, so I’m not sure Appease China is part of their business model at the moment.

I think we may be overthinking this assuming it’s political. It could be as simple as a disagreement over tone, R vs. PG, or how much CGI vs practical effects.

Given that the sequel series had this scene and Game of Thrones had a very similar violent scene I seriously doubt it. Nick forbid the creators to let Azula kill people on screen, but they had no problem with implying her subordinates deaths off screen by not showing them again. Both series were very much inspired by A Song of Ice and Fire. The creators said that, Star Wars, Miyazaki, Lord of the Rings, and a hatred for Harry Potter were the main influences for the series. They hated the later series so much they vowed to do the exact opposite of everything that series did.

They hated game of thrones or Korra? Not sure why the creators would hate the show that they sketched out in totality while producing the first season and continue to write graphic novel continuations for.

No, they hated Harry Potter. They were huge fans of Game of Thrones and emulated their characters on the material. They’d tell their writers to not do Harry Potter bullshite. Nick told them to make a Harry Potter series, and they agreed but closetly hated the series and proceeded to do the opposite of what they thought JKR would do. They thought that Harry was an awful character, that Ron was worthless, and the universe made absolutely no sense. They were perplexed by the Wizarding World economy and didn’t see how it was possible how the Weasleys were poor. They also really hated Quidditch seeing that the sport by default just made the main character more important and JKR didn’t fathom the point of sports. Mike and Bryan’s start of their friendship was their mutual obsession over MMA, kung fu, and football. They may not look like it, but both are sports fanatics and MMA experts, which is why the fight scenes in the shows were so damn good.

This is just so disappointing. The rumor was a 300 million budget for the first season. Just give a blank check to Mike and Bryan, because unlike Dumb and Dumber, they’d put that check to good use. Let them do whatever they wanted. While Netflix might not have a relationship with China yet, they may have that goal, and with Avatar being an overt middle finger to the CCP, I think that may have been the deal breaker. They have no intentions of putting their universe aside for the money. Hopefully they’ll at least give them cash to make another animated series with complete creative freedom. Could be a blessing in disguise if Netflix lets them make another animated series with no major oversight.
