Ava DuVernay to Direct DC’s Superhero Epic ‘New Gods’

quote:

The filmmaker has come on board to direct “New Gods” at Warner Bros. as part of the studio’s DC Extended Universe. “New Gods,” based on the comic book series of the same name published by DC Comics, is aimed at creating a new universe of properties for the studio. Created and designed by Jack Kirby, the comic first appeared in 1971.

ETA: WeGotThisCovered.com has early word on main characters, but I take them as a grain of salt site at best.
quote:

sources close to We Got This Covered have revealed that the plot will mainly focus on Mister Miracle and Big Barda trying to escape the hellish planet known as Apokolips. Furthermore, the politics and conflicts between Apokolips and its rival world, New Genesis, will provide added weight to the storyline.

Why? Because a wrinkle in time was so successful? Even the liberal critics hated it.

I don't know this lady other than what I've heard about the Oprah movie but here's what I'll never get about the internet.

"LOLOLOL DC is garbage! This movie will definitely be terrible! Booooo this choice!"

You've all made your decision. Done. The New Gods film is already a disaster.

But when Rian Johnson is announced for TLJ, the majority of us were circle jerking in excitement about what he'd bring to the Star Wars universe.

Rian had a much more established and solid resume and look how that turned out. This girl has one bad film and you've all jumped on the Ghostbusters reboot hate train already?

Jesus, Mary and Joseph people..

I think it has more to do with the fact that a director who hasn't been successful has been picked to spearhead a new properity for a move studio that has has very little success.

DC'S choices are just laughable at this point. I honestly didn't think it could get any worse after the Michael Bay Lobo thing....I was wrong.

Non-comic fans won’t know about it. It had one of the biggest pushes in comic history but was canceled fairly early in its run. It slowly worked its way into the fabric of the DC universe.

It’s important but not the core of the DCU. But it’s about to be touted as being as sacred as the Gospels as fans cry and rend their garments because they gave the characters to an outspoken director.

Selma was acclaimed.

But looking at this lady’s bio and writings, she’s absolutely race-obsessed. It gets exhausting to me and apparently others here. She was born and raised in California, graduated UCLA, and is 41% white. And now she’s getting big time directorial gigs...yet will still bludgeon us with her racial grievances Bc she’s oppressed or something.

Wtf is Warner brothers thinking? She is the worst kind of person. Forcing her beliefs on people and she’s doing it on a mass scale using a beloved property.

She is bringing the hate on herself. She is now whining that Wrinkle failed because of racism.

Most of the youtube reviewers I watch, are liberal. They hated Wrinkle.

If she pulls the race card for a shitty film, then guess what. I hope she fails going forward and I hope nobody sees her shite.

That isn't me being a jackwagon. That is me saying I am fricking fed up with people force feeding me their political crap when all I want is entertainment.

If you pull the race card for a crappy movie, I hope you career goes to shite.

Oscar nomination for best picture. Oscar win for best song.

A couple of other things for everyone to pick apart:
-DuVernay was the original director for Black Panther, but moved on when she found out she wouldn't be making her own movie.
-Last year she was asked who her favorite superhero was (Twitter) and she replied, "Big Barda". So either she's familiar with the New Gods, or they've been talking to her about this for a long while.

One of the great comic books, but I fear it may be unadaptable for a film. Would work better as a TV show.

And, like John Carter, even a well made New Gods film wouldn't be seen for what it is (a story that begat Star Wars and other franchises and not just another knockoff of the films that it inspired).
