Apollo 13 is one of the best films to have been released in the last 25 years. It should have won Best Picture over Braveheart that year.

1. Apollo 13.
2. The Martian
3. Gravity

I liked The Martian, I thought it was quality sci-fi action with some nice comedic elements. Plus it had Childish Gambino and Matt Damon nailed the lead.

Apollo 13 has to win here though because of it's historical context and film itself.

Gravity is a distant loser IMO. I won't say it sucked because it did bring a great visual aspect to a thriller set in space.

Gravity was meant to be watched in a movie theater.

Even with a kickass TV and sound system, it's just not the same movie at home.

Apollo 13
The Martian
Gravity (if watching on tv at home then it shouldn't even be ranked with the other 2)

I'd rank Interstellar 2nd if we were including that one too

Gravity

Only because I knew what was going to happen in Apollo 13, I'm old enough to remember following it on the news when I was in high school.

Seeing Interstellar on whatever mm film Nolan said to see it in, in Imax was literally the most incredible movie theater experience I'e ever had.

Well, that tends to happen with movies based on true stories...

It's still simply a better movie than the Martian

I like all 3 movies. But Apollo 13 is a classic movie that you can re-watch and re-watch. Gravity and the Martian are excellent movies, great when it comes to pure filmmaking, but Apollo 13 is a classic and has always been loved by millions even years after it was released.

Apollo 13 - great, real life story about real American heroes. The "successful failure" of the Apollo program.

The Martian - very much "Castaway" in space, although very well done. It was hokey and cheesy at times, and it didn't need to be, but still an enjoyable film.

Gravity - Titanic in space. Visually stunning, but without the story or substance of films such as Apollo 13, 2001, Interstellar, or even The Martian, which I would guess are those most comparable films.

What's left off in these discussions is a film called Silent Running. A rare directorial effort by Doug Trumbull - who was responsible for the special photographic effects in 2001, Close Encounters, Star Trek: TMP, and Blade Runner (which, IMHO, puts him into contention for GOAT in this category) - the film is the bridge between 2001 and all these other films in making a more practical, accessible story in one of these cinematic universes.

If you are fans of these types of films and have not watched Silent Running, I strongly encourage you to do so at first opportunity.

Considering Apollo 13 is probably one of the more historically accurate films ever made, it wins by a long shot.

SJWs love the Martian. I remember when it came out, everybody was like "LOLZ SCIENCE THE shite OUT OF IT I LOVE SCIENCE TOO IM SO DIFFERENT"

Apollo 13 is the story of one of the last great eras of this country. When astronauts were all white ex-military, and going to the Moon was just something we did.

I weep for the future.

The only thing Gravity had going for it was visuals because the movie sucked. It should have had little to no dialogue like 2001 a Space Odyssey( which was far superior)

Apollo 13 is at the top. The Martian was entertaining but it didnt have the edge of your seat stronghold on you like Apollo 13.

This sums up my thoughts as well. I enjoy watching The Martian as an entertaining movie, but Apollo 13 hits on an emotional level. That separates it from the other two, not to take anything away from two great movies.

Apollo 13 is just on a different level, because it was real(ish).
