There's your problem right there.

I'm sick and tired of people complaining about people talking about liking the movie.

Cooper's character was annoying as frick. It was a solid movie, but if I were ignorant of the hype, I would have never suspected it to be an Oscar hopeful.

If you've ever been around anyone with mental illness he did a good job of portraying it. That's what it's like being around under medicated people with bipolar disease. You can even pick it up in DeNiros character.

Or any movie. How dare someone like something I do not? Or dislike something I do like? I find divergent opinions to be an attack on the very foundations of society, and should be banned. We should only have absolute consensus on all opinions.

And is there a massive SLP hype machine I'm not aware of? The most I've heard is that it was a really enjoyable, well made movie. I've heard precisely zero people argue it was the greatest thing ever.

I gotta agree with you. The only part of this movie I've heard hyped was JL's performance, which I really enjoyed. It was one of the better movies I saw last year, better than Zero Dark Thirty. I thought JL deserved all the praise she got for her performance. Bradley Cooper, when he's not busy looking for Doug, is actually a pretty decent actor.

Agree 100%. I was never aware of any hype. Just that it was one of the better movies of the year and worth watching. If that's hype then I need to change my definition.

Yup, there wasn't much hype to this movie other than it was nominated for several awards. Even then, I haven't ran into anyone that says "OMG best movie EVARRR".

Personally, a movie like Avatar fits the over-hyped bill. To each his own.

Guess I'm not reading/viewing the same sources. Where are you seeing this hype? I haven't seen it. Silver Linings won just one Oscar, Lawrence as Best Actress, but the other nominations were easily justified; both Bradley Cooper and DeNiro were excellent in their roles. I enjoyed it. Nothing amazing but the acting was solid. I'd give it 8/10.

SLP reviewed very well in the handful of threads here on TD. It also reviewed well with most critics and obviously got multiple oscar nominations..

I felt like I was taking crazy pills reading about how good the movie was. I didn't hate it but at no point did I think it was oscar worthy.

I thought everything with the Eagles was incredibly not-funny. The movie missed in most of the comedic scenes IMO, but clearly most people felt differently.

I wanted to really like this movie, I'm a big fan of Cooper/Lawrence/De Niro it just didn't work for me as a whole.

I don't mind people still hyping a great film that a lot of people still have not got around to watching.

What I am sick of is people hyping The Great Gatsby no matter how bad it is, this is not a great film people, hell it's not even that good.

The problem is people come on here for reviews of films, but this is a pack, or maybe more precisely, a herd. It, therefore, adopts a herd mentality. It is also filled with some of the most hyperbolic people on the internet (see what I did there?).

Point being that when you read a bunch of reviews on TD about how spec-fricking-tacular a movie is, or about how rancid it is, you really need to step back and see what is really being said, if anything.

I can pretty well guarantee most of the people that didn't think the movie was very good if you had not waited to see the movie until after you had read 10 to 20 threads about it on here (since the search functions sucks complete balls and everyone makes their own thread), you would have enjoyed it more. I will admit that, upon further reflection, the movie may have been overhyped on TD, but it was still one of the best movies of last year.

Tempering the hype is always important in watching movies, though it is really pretty damn difficult to do, so I don't really blame you and anyone else for not liking it as much or for trying to pick it apart. It's natural to go into a much hyped movie and look for all the things that they did wrong, dwell on those things, and largely ignore all the things they did right. I've done it a hundred times.

it did nothing for me, and was really unrealistic too.

Well put, I agree with most everything you said.

I went into SLP knowing that it had gotten really good reviews. I remember asking myself what are these people watching that I'm not... It seemed like a pretty generic rom-com that missed on a lot of the com from my point of view. My gf hated it and this type of flick is right up her alley.
