Opposite of the OP. Hollywood basically shut down for two years and gave us shite streaming movies, then turned mediocre future movies into drawn out mediocre TV. The series just aren’t worth the time sink.
I miss the tight format of a movie and getting to the conclusion in 2 hrs. 30% of the series most times are pure filler.

Both formats can be good. I think a good book adaptation works best as a series (miniseries), as long as you have the budget to do it right.
Even some movies bear this out; take LOTR. You consider the extended versions, that's about 12 hrs for the trilogy. That's longer than most seasons on premium services.
The MCU has about 40 hrs just in movies, and those are very episodic also.
I DON'T think you can do a Top Gun: Maverick series. That's a very clear, concise moment, you don't want or need to go beyond it.
But for a good comparison: WW2 combat story. Saving Private Ryan is very good. I'd say Band of Brothers is better. There's enough material that you don't get filler, and I'd hate to think would would be cut away to make it a 2 or even 3 hr movie.

I switch a lot but heavier on series, although sometimes I just want to see a story start to finish in one sitting.

That's what I've found myself doing.
Mainly binge series these days, but sometimes it's nice to stop and knock down a couple of movies just to break it up.
While you're doing that (watching movies), it also lets some more content build up on those episodic series. I don't like watching only one episode per week, if I can help it.

There are times I am bored, browse around, pause on LOTR (haven't rewatched in awhile, but love it)... and move on. I don't want to sit there 4 hours, and/or commit to the 12 hr trilogy.
Depending on the mood, I might toss on a 2 hr movie, or I might put a single episode of something on (GoT Hardhome or Battle of the Bastards, for example). GoT, for all the hate on the finale, does have about 4-5 excellent-quality mini-movies, lasts about an hr, and you don't need to do a full rewatch since you know the story.

The Golden Age of dramatic series, but not the Golden Age of TV in general. TV used to be a lot better overall back in the 80s and 90s.
You could even throw in some shows from the 50's.
"Your Show of Shows", "U. S. Steel Hour", etc.
