I finally got around to seeing it today. I liked it. It’s a light movie that just follows two characters around. There’s not really a plot, it’s super loose.

And the whole age difference thing — it’s kind of sweet. Gary’s a grown up 15 year old - he’s got all these business hustles - and Alana is an immature 25 year old - living with her parents, working crappy jobs, hanging out with teenagers. There’s nothing sexual. Like you know a week after the movie ends, he’ll meet a girl at school or she’ll turn her shite around.

One thing I've learned is that PTA movies, along with A24 films are not going to land with me.

So nothing sexual or nothing sexual in a Cuties sort of way, which isn't explicitly overt, yet is heavily implied?

If it's a friendship, then fine. Sounds kinda nice, if unconventional. But change the sexes up and 15 yr old girl with an immature 25 yr old guy...

I'm just going on what others are saying, plus some of the advertising for the movie. One artwork has the girl holding out her hand and the guy character is in her palm, clearly indicating he's being toyed with. If that's not accurate and more artistic license for the movie, meh.

Sounds like it has an audience and is well made. Good for them. I'll likely get around to watching it when it comes on a streaming service, for free, sometime later.

I loved it.. definitely in my top 3 of 2021 of what I've seen so far.. it's definitely one of PTA's more down to earth film.. the two leads are incredible for basically their first acting roles.. oh and, Bradley Cooper is amazing

No, it's the name of a record store that was open in the same area of LA where the film takes place... yes, the record store is never really shown but the soundtrack is an important part of the film.

they both definitely compete for each others attentions in a more than friends context although not really getting overtly sexual. i kinda thought the relationship was like forrest gump+jenny with an age gap also forrest being smarter and jenny not as whore-ish.

it seems a major theme of the movie is the obvious uneasiness about the age gap and that it would be rather objectionable if you changed their sexes. the movie kinda targets and modulates how glaring or subtle the uneasiness is.

Available for rent now. Watched it tonight

I frickin loved that movie. Just straight up a fun time. Granted, it checks a lot of boxes for me in terms of it being PTA and a coming of age type movie with some nostalgia kickers, but man I really loved this one. Definitely his best one since The Master for me.

The Bradley Cooper- Jon Peters scenes is worth your time for this by itself honestly

Cannot recommend it highly enough. PSH’s kid might have some potential

Could have done with much much much more Cooper/Jon Peters.

Overall, I did quite enjoy the film. PTA should just set all of his films in the 1970s.

A triple play of Inherent Vice, Licorice Pizza, and Boogie Nights would be pretty great.

I definitely would line up to watch a full movie of the Jon Peters and Sean Penn/movie producer piece of the movie but also not sure if the Jon Peters scenes would’ve been as effective over a longer period of time

Probably not, but you still could have easily had twice the screen time of Peters and it would have had the same impact. There's so much more there.

As for Penn, I'm still trying to figure out who he was supposed to be. Was he basically Tyrone Power? Why was he in the Valley?

All great bizarre quirks of this film.

He’s based on William Holden and i think the movie they are referencing in the restaurant scene is The Bridge on the River Kwai

Makes sense. Holden was a notorious drunkard.

I actually think it's The Bridges at Toko-Ri. It starred Holden and Grace Kelly. I'm fairness I had never heard of the movie until I looked Holden up after watching Licorice Pizza.

I was reading his wiki and he was the best man at Ronald Reagans wedding and while in Italy he killed another driver while driving drunk but for whatever reason I found this next bit really interesting, he had a relationship with a French actress named Capucine and this is from her wiki:

quote:

She had a relationship[citation needed] with Charles K. Feldman, who produced her films What's New Pussycat?, The 7th Dawn, and The Honey Pot. This affair ended when Capucine met William Holden, but she and Feldman remained friends until his death in 1968. He left her $75,000 (equivalent to $558,000 in 2020).[14]

Capucine met actor William Holden in the early 1960s. They starred in the films The Lion (1962) and The 7th Dawn (1964). Holden was married to Brenda Marshall, but the two began a two-year affair, which ended in part due to Holden's increasing alcoholism.[28] After the affair ended, she and Holden remained friends until his death in 1981.[29] In his will he left her $50,000 (equivalent to $142,000 in 2020).[10]

75,000 in 1968 = $558,000
50,000 in 1981 = $142,000
