Mike's Holiday Inn is impressive, but I wonder if he has his hole ready for when the wind, rain, snow, biter cold arrive. Probably will adjust. It's coming soon.
I don't even think they had Jose on at all this episode. Makes you wonder about some of them they are featuring early-on - are some of these people on their way out? It does seem like Mike and Jose are the front-runners so far.
I am surprised Multiple Sclerosis is the final female standing. She's running from bears, though, so it looks like the trifecta is about to unfold.
I knew Tracy was toast from the get-go. Tried to blame it on her rage. More like a need for twinkies and Old Milwaukees. I knew once she got real hungry, she'd get angry and crumble. She also knew she was bear meat. That cub was about to go Revenant on her and none of us wanted to see that. Not even the momma bear.

Dude, she was "ragin'" with that air horn.
She was scared as hell, which is perfectly normal. I think her real struggle is accepting her fear.

I wonder if they exhaust all of their provided bear counter measures if they're allowed to call for more so they can stay out there or is it one they use all the air horn & flares then they are SOL...?

I ain't gonna lie. I probably would've tapped out after the bear encounter as well.

Tracy has some major imbalance problems, glad to get her off the show early. The one guy making the gill net was pretty impressive. I agree with someone who said earlier about location being a large part of it. I was watching season 1 and there was 1 guy who got dropped into the middle of the marsh. You just cant survive out there you need to be on the coast.
This season doesnt seem to be showing the importance of fresh water like season 1 did in the first 4 eps ive saw. (I am currently watching season 1 as well). But maybe they just figured that was covered enough in season 1, people have learned, and they dont need to show as much. I am sure a lot goes into deciding which themes they show and what they dont show in hundreds of hours of footage.

Ive seen 5 eps so far from season 1. The bear frequency with the cougars and wolfs howling made that half of the season very nerve wracking. Seems pretty dangerous to be out there alone. How many seasons do you think they would have to do before someone got serious injured. (death, or near it)?

I'm waiting for one of them to storm the other guy's island and waste him/her. Seriously, Mike could probably take guests on his island.
I guess no major mishaps so far because they're going to have a season 3 it looks like, but that is something I've thought about as well.

They're SOL.

man, if that's the case (being SOL) my new priority preparation tactic prior to getting dropped off is learning how to make as many bear countermeasures to my campsite as possible. spear triggered booby traps, massive snares, utilizing poisonous flora/fauna from the area, etc.

You guys don't remember the weather last season.
Once it gets stormy those shelters are going to get wrecked. Especially good old boy with all his nice things he's making for himself.
So far it's been nice and sunny.
The previews start to show the weather we know to be normal there coming in.

Several people have alluded to the weather change which winds this whole thing up and makes it a dire matter of survival. Play time is over here real soon, just like last year. The fish move, the best net setups on the shoreline are so important, including being able to get to them (fish) in the changing tides, the whole dynamic changes. Those who can still survive will win and that includes the mind games of being holed up "alone" and being able to be a united soul with nature. Plus, having the "hole" setup in place to survive the weather. You are right about that for sure.

The point of a sturdier shelter has been at the forefront of my mind for each season.
Why aren't these people sawing/axing down logs & branches to make legitimate walls & a roof structure?
The tarp tent inside the trees are MAYBE placed well enough to not be as effected by the winds, as the tree trunks will obviously break up the winds off of the water. But the combo of str4ng rains come down through the trees & even the POTENTIAL of the winds has me wanting to just build & build if it's me out there.
Big enough to move around COMFORTABLY inside of & dry out the firewood, clothes, & smoke fish.

Most contestants are on the coast.
Their tarps will get rocked.
The worst thing might not be stability, but the noise. I can deal with camping in rain, hail, snow, and thunderstorms, but I have met my match every time I have dealt with wind. It is constant and relentless.

The bears up there are "smaller", less agressive, well-fed and just curious animals. They are not likely going to attack since you won't be stumbling upon them or their cubs. Alan mentioned this in this season. The hardest thing is convincing yourself of that.

Cougars would be my biggest fear.

Well home girl decided to put up her gillnet right in a spot she's seen a bear family frequent.
So, now you're competing for space, food, and control over a bear family. We know that a mother bear with cubs will do whatever it can to protect and feed them.

I wouldn't be worried about those considering all the bears.
I think the dense bear population would keep the cougars away. Unless the cougars like preying on the young cubs.
All that being said, I think the best thing to do for these contestants is to build positive mental state with protection in their "home". I don't see why they employ what tribes do in the Savannah of Africa and build those brush walls affixed with outward-pointing sticks. This would set up a perimeter around their sleeping area.
It is hard to tell if some of the contestants have a food prep and cooking area separate of their sleeping area. The idea is you want separation there. You could put up the protective perimeter there too!
Again, it might not work in this environment, but it is the mentality of it. Like Alan, he convinced himself the bears are happy with the food they are already getting.

I remember Alan last year talking about a cooking camp but the 2nd fire was too difficult. I think he ended up cooking at camp and eating at the beach.

Just finished Alone S1. Alan reminds me a lot of Phil Roberston. His jokes, wisdom, even the rhythm of his speech. Very similar.

Mike reminds me of an older more seasoned version of Lucas from season one. I worry when the weather changes and hes forced to hunker down if his mind will allow him to hibernate. Alans best attribute was his ability to control his emotions and spend time alone comfortably.
Mikes structure looks very solid but will it hold up is the big question.. Im a little surprised he hasnt decided to build a more solid structure to accompany his mansion in the woods.
Its easy to see that this years contestants prepared much better for the show but once the weather rolls in, all bets are off. I patiently await when we can focus down on 4 contestants akin to last year.. Jose needs more screen time but I assume they know he will be featured plenty down the line.

It is a tarp on some line.
Lots of wind will get in there. It's not solid at all.
