I know, but the term "Good Actor" gets thrown around too much.

The way that I see it there are:

People who play themselves well - Morgan Freeman, Keanu Reeves
People who can play slight variations of themselves - Russel Crowe, Johnny Depp
People who choose good roles/scripts - Tom Hanks (Not bad actors, but their skills are overrated often)
People who strike it rich a couple of times, and could be good but often don't follow through - Jim Carrey
People who are fun to watch - Simon Pegg, Old Jack Black
Too Young to Matter Yet - Gosling
Bad Actors - Too many to name

And the Fringe, People with Potential - Downey Jr., Winslet, Cheadle, Blanchett, etc.

Some people are often a combination of a few above, making them seem better than they really are

And lastly -

Good Actors - Oldman, Streep, Hoffman, Brando, K. Hepburn, etc. Big list, but not as big as many think it is.

Apparently you're advice on how to measure good acting hasn't quite payed off yet.

Ok.

But in regards to Russell Crowe, he plays a different character with a different personality in every movie.

Gladiator
American Gangster
Body of Lies
A Beautiful Mind

And yet you leave out the one role that should be in discussion, The Insider. That still is Crowe's best performance, and it was a great one.

I'll say the same thing about A Beautiful Mind that I do about other characters with mental issues, it's easy to do and usually lauded because it's about a small, sensitive portion of the population.

His turn in Body of Lies was commendable (but not great, merely adequate), especially for a subpar movie, but the rest are slight variations of the same character.

yes Depp has a bigger bandwagon. But he has proven that he can be a bas arse actor. and play some pretty cool roles.

Yes makeup and weird accents often do make roles bigger and seem better. It's all flash that deters from real acting ability. His roles are "cool," in the sense that they have been in imaginative movies, but that doesn't automatically make him a great actor.

quote:

but my whole point with him is what has he been GREAT in?

Chaplin.

quote:

it wasnt hard for him to be good in iron man, that didnt show any range.

Why?

quote:

if you say tropic thunder showed range then you are retarted.

Nope. not the reason he is good. And I don't think he is "GREAT" by the way, and neither is Depp. He is the better actor right now, and can be better than Depp in the end.

quote:

so i havent seen chaplin, maybe he was great in that. thats still only one thing.

And that's one thing more than many, many actors, including Depp. Depp doesn't have his "great" performance yet (notice the word yet, he's capable of it, jsut haven't seen it). And I have not seen Public Enemies, fwiw.

I agree almost completely with your assesments Freauxzen except fot Tom Hanks. He plays completely different characters with different perspectives and personalities in many different movies. Splash, Nothing in Common, Big, Philadelphia, Gump, Apollo 13, Castaway, Charlie Wilson's War, Lady Killers, etc. I think because he plays a __ year old white guy in every movie he isn't given his due. I noticed a lot (not all) of the characters you gave Oldman props for he has very outlandish coustumes and an outlandish character. Hanks always plays just some regular old white guy.

I'm glad no one has mentioned Denzel because he is right up there with Freeman. No range at all, same character in every movie. I like his movies, don't get me wrong, but how he won Best Actor for being the same dude he is in every movie, I do not know. Well I do, but who wants to go there?

Clint Eastwood is my favorite actor but he is kind of like your Jimmy Stewart description. Outside of Unforgiven, I'd say his best roles were from little known movies like Bridges of Madison County (Meryl Streep props) and Honkey Tonk Man.

I think that John Travolta and burt Reynolds could have been good. I think their career choices have held them back more than their acting ability.

I also agree with you about Vincent D'anofrio. He was Phillip Seymour Hoffman first.

A lot of people like to hate on Tom Cruise on this board, but I think he has good skills. But I could lump him into the same category as John Malkovich also, he tends to just play himself in every role. It is hard for me to give him props for 4th of July because I thought that movie sucked.

K. Hepburn
indeed.

Hoffman might be the greatest actor ever. Bogart is often overlooked on these lists. Gotta give big props to Orson Wells as well.

If you don't think Morgan Freeman has range, you missed him as Easy Reader on The Electric Company.
