Billy Bob was good in Primary Colors, but so was everyone else. Kathy Bates was tremendous in that movie as was Travolta.

Monsters Ball maybe, but then I'd say Ledger > Thornton in that movie.

Yeah. I think Travolta and Bates owned that movie, and Thorton was good, but he was just doing a limited James Carville impersonation. He's a good actor, but I don't consider that role stretching his range. Neither do I consider his character in Monster's Ball, even though he did a good job.

Edit:
Ledger would have to go right up the list too I think. Unfortunately his body of work was too short. But... Joker, Monster's Ball, convincing gay Cowboy, Knight's Tale, etc.

That's a pretty damn big range right there.

+1 Heath Ledger had very good range.

But we shouldn't just be talking about range as roles ie. cop, mailman, retard, grocery clerk. I mean the personalities these actors are creating.

Billy Bob's characters have huge range. A local psycho retard that we've all met at some point. Completely sympathetic character that you would ignore if he tried to talk to you on the street.

His character in Monster's Ball was completely dispicable unworthy of redemption. Peter Boyle was spot on in that movie as his father.

Don't forget him as Gary Gaines in Friday Night Lights.

Norton is the first one to come to mind. But there a few others that are already mentioned that are pretty good too. A few more I think should be added:

Liam Neeson
John Turturro
Ed Harris
Liev Schreiber
Forest Whitaker

And, I'll add Pitt to that list although I'm sure that one will get flamed.

I'll second that and Gary Oldman of course belongs in this discussion as mentioned.

I thought about that one but I didn't know if people just understood the pressure that coaches in huge programs get every day from every angle. It's a wonder the suicide rate for high school football coaches in Texas isn't through the roof. Thorton did an excellent job displaying that.

Gary Oldman, end/thread.

Played Sid Viscious, Beethoven in immortal beloved, romeo is bleeding, Drexyl in True Romance, Bad cop in The Professional, bad guy Russian in Air Force One, Irish gangster in State of Grace, Commissioner Gordon in Batman and the Dark Knight, Dracula in Bram Stoker's Dracula (he was great in this).

A lot of good acting questions lately...

quote:

(other than Tom Hanks)

Hanks is a lot like Jimmy Stewart. Likable, charming. But ultimately plays very few roles. Take out Forest Gump and you don't have much there.

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love Stewart, but he was limited.

Johnny Depp

Need not repeat myself...

Don Cheadle

This.

quote:

Gary Oldman
Meryl Streep

are the top 2 IMO

/thread

Those two are tops for living actors.

quote:

Robert Downey Jr.

Underrated as an actor, and yes.

quote:

John Malkovich

Two words, Christopher Walken. Meaning, basically they both end up playing themselves essentially, and slight variations there of.

quote:

Liev Schreiber

Could be great, hasn't done enough high profile, career defining roles, but he is quite good. Any Welles fans should check out RKO 281, his performance is excellent.

Same can be said for Vincent D'Nofrio before he got into TV, he had acting chops.

No mention of Daniel Day-Lewis either, he should be up there.

Heath Ledger would have been great, no doubt.

Robin Williams- even though he has done some really bad movies, he has incredible range. He can do his regular schtick or he can be very dramatic.

Jim Carrey- A slapstick style nut who has toned it down and done some serious acting that is pretty decent.

Gene Hackman, Robert Duvall, Clint Eastwood, Morgan Freeman, Tommy Lee Jones, and Harrison Ford have all stepped out into differing styles and succeeded.
