He does make legitimate points. GRRM is struggling to close the series, struggling.

Finished book 4! That wasn't so bad.

What do I read now?

Wait another couple of years for book 5. Or you could pick up some Robin Hobb, Joe Abercrombie, or Steven Erikson.

No I don't too many deadlines and publication dates have come and gone. As far as I know, the manuscript still isn't to the publisher.

Um.

Unless I am mistaken, he has NEVER stated that it will be out on this specific date before now.

It was always "I hope I can finish up by this date so it can be out by this date."

You should read The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss. All of you, now! It is that good. Other good selections The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scotty Lynch and The Malazan Book of the Fallen by Steven Erickson.

The second, Red seas under red skies, is a real downer. Not nearly as good as his debut. The third novel is close to completion, after he had trouble battling depression recently.

This is a very lengthy task. It is 10 novels, but the series is complete! There are definitely some installments which stand out, some for being completely awesome, and others for falling short.

Have not read the first novel you listed.

I've wanted to read the novellas but am not interested in graphic novels, and was hoping to find them separate from the anthologies. Not looking like they're available like that tho.

The first one actually had some good stories along with it.

the second one dont bother. The sworn sword itself isn't good at all. Although, it does provide the most in-depth information on the previous generations of Targaryen/Blackfyre rebellion.

The third is very good, but IMO just slightly below the first.

They are worth reading, the first and third are entertaining, the second you can find all relevant information on ASOIAF sites.

Yeah, I think he's the gravedigger too. I didn't know that was breaking news.

He has made promises or timelines to fans before, didn't meet it and then left a post on there for years that he won't post a deadline again. Reading his updates and "Not a Blog", GRRM doesn't like to be held accountable.

I hope that with the HBO series now begun, the publisher will push him more.

What the GRRM apologists forget (maybe those of us critical of him too) is that he's a quirky dude. If the Jets lose he goes into a serious funk. When Bush was re-elected he was depressed and reading him you would have thought the world was ending. I swear he didn't write anything that year.

Erikson knows how to close the deal. He churns a book out every year or two. I think he and Esslemont grew up together and created this world together.

(Bet they got laid a lot)

I thought so to, but there is a big debate about this.

I would also recommend:

Daniel Abraham and his The Long Price Quartet series. I liked them a lot. Also, Brent Weeks liked his Night Angles series and just finished his new book, The Black Prism and loved it.

Joe, would you mind changing the title to "book discussion with spoilers". I think the thread has grown past a single book question. Thanks.

I read the first Codex Alera, it was good but haven't picked up the rest of the series. If you haven't read Mistborn Trilogy by Sanderson it is probably number three behind LoTR and ASoIaF

Yeah, I really enjoyed this. I have Wise Man's Fear on the shelf at home but haven't had time to start it yet. Just finishing up Jack Whyte's series on the Knights Templar.

In theory The Wheel of Time is one volume from completion. There are definite peaks and valleys concerning the quality but still, volumes 4,5,6 are as good as anything in the genre. I'm a bit skeptical that Sanderson can wrap it up in one more. At least in any satisfying way.
