A Christmas Carol on FX

Anyone see the new FX version last night starring Guy Pearce? Here's the Trailer.
I thought it was great. REALLY dark. Instead of following the source material so closely as pretty much all of the previous films they weave all kinds of dirty stories in. We get to see some background on Jacob Marley, there's a bunch of sexual abuse/harrassment thrown in, and of course great modern CGI effects. The acting is top notch.
It is really long (over 3 hours with commercials) but worth it IMO.

I loved it. They really made Scrooge a miserable old monster without emotion. The scene when his father visited him was great.

So basically they stuck in some SJW shite that's not even remotely hinted at in the novel.

Yes, but we've all seen the dozens of versions true to the story. It was interesting to see someone take the material and change it up a bit. And to see QUITE a different side to Mrs. Cratchit.

I'm actually a big fan of Guy Pearce. He's very good in this, but the liberties the writers took with the story, particularly the specific reason why Scrooge hates Christmas so much, made this very difficult for me to like. There is no joy, not even after Scrooge's "redemption" at the end. The whole Mary Cratchit side bar was odd and completely unnecessary, although I did appreciate that they went into Marley's back story, where most other adaptations pretty much ignore him. Overall, I didn't enjoy it and didn't appreciate the "modern" spin. I guess I'm a purist when it comes to the classics.

I haven't watched it yet. Now, I'm hesitant to invest the time. I love most of the other older versions. Not sure if modernizing it that much is a good thing.

Overall, I liked it.
It strays from the book a lot, but I liked the additional Marley scenes. Scrooge is a good bit younger than he is normally portrayed, but I thought the actor did a good job.

There's a little joy. Just with a dark edge. You're still left wondering if his redemption would hold. Loved all the twists and back stories.

A Christmas Carol is a wonderful, life-affirming and aspirational story of redemption.
I wish these demented moderns would come up with their own stories instead of doing their worst to dirty up beloved old stories, but I assume they derive satisfaction from this.
