In any case, I think they missed the boat not nominating "Gran Torino" for something...anything!

it wasn't nominated for anything (save golden globe best song) by any awards, not just the oscars. It wasn't even nominated by the members of this very board for a 'roscoe'..

Also, In Bruges only getting one nomination is a bit disappointing. It was better than Benjamin Button

I think that's because it's foreign. I believe that's why foreign films have their own category, because they can't be nominated in other categories.

Well wouldn't Slumdog be considered foreign? As well as Man on Wire...maybe not.

Slumdog is English, which I guess is technically foreign but I believe the academy has a history of including English films if it's not officially part of the rules. Waltz with Bashir is Israeli, very much a foreign film.

Man on Wire is an English documentary, and is nominated for best documentary.

All those nominations for Button but no Cate Blanchett? Very surprised about that.

Also Frost/Nixon really got some love. Don't know if it should have received that much although Frank Langella was fantastic.

Glad to see Slumdog get recognized. Too bad it will probably lose out to the Hollywood powerhouses.

Is there anymore of a lock than WALL-E in animation?

Yes!!!

Are the oscars starting to look at comedies a tad more now?

Seriously, how ironic would it be if he wins?

Do directors/production companies just kind of know when their movies will get a lot of Oscar recognition? Or do they get winks and nods from reviewers during prescreening? I'm just wondering because almost of of these movies were released in December. They do that for a reason.

I think a lot of movies, just the kind of dramas that they are, fit into the mold of what typically wins awards. They know that if they release it late in the year, it's right before the oscars and the buzz will still be high and fresh in the judges memories.

The Curious Case of how the f*** did this movie get 13 nominations?

not that surprising actually..

I hope this doesn't start a long chain of unbearable puns on the title. Back when Indiana Jones came out, those puns were excruciating and it lasted for months.

Easy. It was the only Hollywood studio film that was a viable contender after the pre-Oscar awards. Which means it is the Establishment Choice. Remember, there are a lot of old fossils in the Academy, and they don't want to give awards to movies not created by the major studios. Which is how Frost/Nixon got so many nods despite being a fairly pedestrain movie that like a hundred people saw.

I haven't seen any of the Best Picture Nominees, maybe the first year for me for this to happen.

FWIW, I'm not really surprised about the Gran Torino shun.

I thought she was terrible, almost laughably so.
