Get an open box BenQ from Adorama. They are a big chain of stores that sell demo models for a great price. Got one about six months ago and I couldn't tell it wasn't brand new.

That isn't a 4k projector.

What's your budget?

EPSON 5050UB on the lower end, very dependable and tested. One of the best ever made. Discounted right now.
5050

From there the Epson laser projectors are even better but cost more.

I have an LG laser 4k which has been pretty good. Had to replace the DMD chip on it once though.

Higher budget you start getting into JVC and Sony probably at about $5k- $10k.

It’s a 1080, but I love my BenQ short throw.

You can't get a 4k projector for under 1000. Buy a cheap 85 inch from walmart and move on.

Right, you're wasting your time. Big TV if it works on your situation. Sub $1000 4k projector will be straight arse.

Already have a 75” tv that I like. We watch tons of movies and have a basement so figured a projector would be sweet. We have the space for it.

Why is 120hz a must? I turn all that shite off anyway so I don’t get soap opera effect.

You have to spend a lot of money on a projector to get a picture as good as even a shitty TV.

Even in pitch black darkness? We have a basement that we can totally black out. This won’t be a daily driver.

The junk you’re looking at is gonna be a trash “4k” dlp. They aren’t 4k and the contrast ratio is garbage. The CR will be bad. In total darkness blacks will look light grey. They can’t come close to 1:1 4k. 1000 would be better spent on a big tv, even a cheap brand will be better than a projector in every way but size.

Also stay away from a used true 4k, the panels fade on them. I bet you can get one on FB for a grand but I wouldn’t.

Update: bought an $850 4k HDR projector and just got everything set up last night. Longevity still needs to be assessed of course, but everything looks great. Got a 110” screen set up easily and have a remote control to roll the screen up and down so I can easily flip between the tv and the projector. Both come out of a splitter from the receiver. Eventually my next receiver will do 2 outputs natively but that is another project.

We bought blackout curtains so we can watch stuff during the day if we want. However at night, even with my wife’s side lamp, it is plenty bright. We are incredibly pleased with the image. Watched one of our new 4k Blu-ray’s of lord of the rings last night and it was wonderful.

My only issue is the 4k Blu-ray via plex was dropping signal occasionally. Other streaming services did not do this during testing. I think the bit rate may be too high for the cheap 50’ hdmi cable I bought. Buying a new fiber optic and much shorter cable to test. Next Will test the splitter to see if that was the issue. Both were $20ish components so will return and buy a little nicer and see if that fixes the issue.

ETA: overall though I am hooked. The screen is proportioned great for our space and it’s amazing how much more screen real estate we get out of it. Makes my 70” tv look like we’re watching on an iPhone when we roll the screen back up.

What a shite take. You have clearly never seen a properly set up mid to high-end Sony or JVC PJ and definitely not a Barco or Digital Projection PJ. All forms of displays have limitations along with pros and cons but declaring all PJs as garbage is an incredibly ignorant opinion.

I have stayed out of this thread because I would just be trying to spend OP's money that he didn't want to spend. He is happy now and that is all that matters.

depends on what you're looking for

I have this one set up in my Garage

Vizony Projector

with this screen:
Procetor Screen

I watch LSU games at roughly 150" in HD every weekend.
the room does need to be relatively dark to be a able to see it good though.
