I don't think Avatar will win Best Picture. Has there ever been a Best Picture winner that wasn't nominated for best screenplay (either categories)?

I wonder how James Cameron feels having his ex-wife competing against him in all those categories.

Ha, my two favorite movies of the year - The Road and Moon - didn't get nominated for a damn thing.

Oh well. I liked Up In The Air and Basterds, wasn't particularly blown away by Hurt Locker, and still haven't seen A Serious Man or Avatar.

The Hurt Locker is the best picture of the year, imo, and it's not even close.

That said, I'll be ok with Avatar or Up in the Air winning.

However, if The Blind Side wins I'm gonna be beyond furious.

With The Hurt Locker and Up, best films of the year, imo

I want Basterds to get best picture. Its a pretty tough category this year though. I cant believe The Road or Moon wasnt up for ANYTHING!

Yeah, I forgot about Up. I enjoyed it too. Wouldn't be disappointed to see it win.

Most of those it actually deserves. Only ones I don't think it deserves is Best Picture.

He did say that his ex-wife should have won the Golden Globe.

Its animated, so it won't win. If there were still 5 nominees, its a safe bet Up wouldn't be among them. The Academy pretty much hates animation, and I am slightly surprised that Up made the BP list. Its a great, great movie, and I'd say that next to Inglourious Basterds, it was my favorite movie this year.

completely overlooked. in a such a weak year this should've gotten way more nods.

You would be right. It's coming down to either Hurt Locker or Avatar. It's basically a two-movie race at this point.

On the other hand, "Up in the Air," is clearly the Little Miss Sunshine/Juno indie pick (and I though it was a very good movie)

the indie pick? Hurt locker is also an indie pick, among a few others on that list. Up in the Air, is much more 'grown up' than Little Miss Sunshine and Juno.

I actually enjoyed The Fantastic Mr. Fox more than Up, but Up had more of an emotional effect on me. It will probably win because it tugs at everyone's heartstrings.

For the documentaries, I only saw two of the nominees (food, inc and the cove) and after I saw the cove I thought it HAD to win best doc. It was that good. Food, Inc was good too, but the cove was VERY powerful, shocking, thrilling, and heartbreaking really. Just the whole thing was very very well done. It was one of the best docs I've seen (even if they used some, uhh, selective editing).

Up in the Air is the "grown-up" middlebrow movie pick occupied last year by Frost/Nixon. An emminently forgettable movie that was solidly made. I do think Basterds has a shot, but it will likely syphon votes from Hurt Locker allowing Avatar to win.

And then the world will implode.

I think that phrase could be used for all of the Best Picture nominees this year.
