was this your first National album or are you familiar with their earlier stuff?

First time I've devoted a lot of time to a full album. I had just heard a couple tracks from them. Literally every song kills IMO, except track 8. I'm sure I'm late to a really awesome party in regards to them.

That's when you know it's a good year, when you completely forget one of your favorite bands came out with a new album.

cool. Boxer and Alligator are just as good too. In fact, Boxer is probably still my favorite of theirs.

Runaway (track 8) is actually one of my favorites on the album. Little Faith is probably my least favorite, although it is still solid.

Yeah I've got to get their older stuff now. I've heard y'all mention how those two albums kill.
It's not that I dislike 8... It just doesn't seem to flow with the rest of the album. Drags on a bit. I kept waiting for the album to become a little more upbeat, and for it to change vocally. But it really never does. The lyrics just take over and they quietly jam, in a very subtle way. If that's even possible.

If you love Boxer (and why shouldn't you) I'd recommend The Virginia EP. It's basically a B-Side album to Boxer and it's really really good. It has probably my fav National song in Santa Clara.

I'm with you on Boxer. But I love "Gospel", a closing track so good you'd think it was a Hold Steady album.

Anyone checked out the new Big Boi album yet? It's pretty legit. Check that, it's awesome.

Yeah, pretty great!

I like how most my favorite albums aren't included in the best lists posted so far. Not sounding snobbish, that's how great 2010 has been!

Tomy, tell me General Patton isn't your favorite song on the album.

Probably my favorite, and that's a tough call, yes.

I've had a hard time getting into The National. It sounds too much like Interpol and I find both pretty boring. I'll give the boxer another try I guess.

the coda with the awesome piano and him singing "You know I dreamed about you for twenty-nine years before I saw you. You know I dreamed about you, I missed you for for twenty-nine years." is phenomenal.

The National.

Never heard of them before today. Went to youtube to check out the most popular tracks. Meh. Seems like all new bands I hear about sound exactly like this. I call it the hipster-minimalist genre and it really bores me to tears. Are the majority of the bands on this thread like The National?

Presently, I'm most into Muse. I think Uprising is one of the best songs of the past few years.

Not at all. They have a pretty individual sound compared to a lot of their peers, even though they will forever be plagued by Interpol comparisons.

I'm sure more trained ears make big distinctions in all these bands, but when I think of The National, MGMT, Vampire Weekend, TV on the Radio, etc., it all reeks of the same boring, non-melodious crap to me.

I have albums from all of those bands, and they all have a much different sound to me, and that's the key.

What do you usually listen to? I have no interest in passing judgment whatsoever, it would just give an idea of what bands may be similar. That is, if you're looking for new bands to check out.

Well, I've been surprised by how much Muse has snuck up on me. I was always aware of their existence, but never listened to them. In the past 6 months, I spun all of their albums dozens of times and I think they are really special, with potentially the most recent album being the best. I call them the "good Radiohead".

I really like instrumentally-sound rock - my favorite band of all time is Metallica, but Weezer is really up there too. I can listen to a band like the Killers, but their actual sound annoys me - it's way "softer" than I would like and leans towards the hipster-minimalism I described earlier even though the songwriting is great.

Honestly, I like anything except for gangsta rap and new country. These bands that are currently proliferating just don't get me revved up for some reason. Muse provides just the right mix of "new" experimental sounds along with old school rocking out.

I'd be grateful if you could point me in the right direction. I hate stuff like Death Cab and Modest Mouse, but I really like other "emo" type bands like My Chemical Romance.

I can understand not liking the National as a minimalist hipster band. I actually dislike a lot of the boring hipster bands like Panda Bear and Animal Colletive... but I don't see how you can call Vampire Weekend minimalist or non-melodious. They are nothing like the National other than they both have guitars.

But I will plug the New Pornographers again. Their subgenre is power pop. Doesn't that sound like fun?

And I do like Muse, but I actually found their recent album, ironically, to be boring.
