I watched this film a long time ago on Netflix instant, and I revisited it again tonight. I really think this is a completely underrated film in the dystopian genre. It's a very close adaptation of the novel by Orwell, and I think it does a great job of fleshing out some of the novel's concepts. Has anyone else seen it?

seen it a couple of times. i think it was very well done considering the material the filmmakers were working with. not easy to translate that into film but they did a fine job. the movie brought a sense of realism and plausibility that I thought would be hard to achieve, but they pulled it off. John Hurt was a great fit for that role.

Really perfect for that role. Funny that later he played the "Big Brother" character in V for Vendetta. The movie was so gritty. They really captured the poverty of the dystopian environment. It's a shame more people don't know about this movie in my opinion.

that was the first thing I thought when I first saw the preview for V. another excellent film. i agree that the cinematography and set design did a good job of creating a deprived society.

There's also a 50s version that's not too bad but I liked this one better. Hurt was good but I was also impressed by Richard Burton's O'Brien. He died like a week after making this movie.

I disagree. I thought the orchestral score did a much better job of creating a beautifully paranoid atmosphere. I really didn't like the Eurythmics score.
