I just caught a screening, and it's stunning. Deakins really is the best ever behind the camera. It feels like you're right there, walking through trenches and crawling through the mud.

If it doesn't sweep just about all of the technical awards, I'll be angry.

Can’t wait for this one. Hoping it’s not another Flyboys. There’s just not many good WWI movies.

If you haven’t seen it, give Paths of Glory a shot. It’s old, but it is a masterpiece.

I'm just worried it's another Dunkirk.

Visually stunning, no story or character development.

If it's just following Frodo and Bilbo on one long shot with little dialogue as they traverse the horrors of war I'll be pissed.

Visually compelling does not alone a great movie make. It's the main reason Dunkirk fell so flat. Where's the characters to worry about beyond cardboard cutouts?

Paths of Glory is an excellent film.
One of Kubrick best
Sargent York is a good WWI movie too. But there just aren’t many. War Horse and Flyboys are just ridiculous war movies.

I hope you're pissed. I don't give a shite about character development in most war movies, exceptions being biopics like Patton. I'm going for an experience in Dolby.

An experience in Dolby?

That sounds like a gay porn film.

Wow. Really?

I'll notify David Lean's estate. Still, your claim is bold, and I'm definitely catching this.

Hard pass on Mendes ripping off Spielberg and Nolan (again).

David Lean wasn’t a cinematographer

Speaking of great cinematography. Had to google it but Georg Kraus shot that one. Thought it might of been John Alcott who did 2001, Barry Lyndon, The Shining, and A Clockwork Orange.

Eh, while it is true that Freddie Young has won 3 Oscars for cinematography, it's also true that all three were for David Lean movies.

I agree with this. Dunkirk feels like you missed the first half hour.

The story is the foundation of all entertainment. You must have a good story otherwise it's just masturbation.

You have to go back a while, find movies that were made closer to the actual conflict.

1930’s Best Picture “All Ouiet on the Western Front” and Howard Hughes’ epic “Hell’s Angels” from the same year are two worth seeing if you can get your hands on them.

The first ever Best Picture winner, 1927’s “Wings” (silent), 1925’s “The Big Parade” (also silent), 1937’s “Le Grande Illusion” (“The Grand Illusion” - French w/ English subtitles) and 1938’s “The Dawn Patrol” (w/ Errol Flynn) are also excellent choices.

Dunkirk is better on almost every subsequent rewatch for me. It really is a good film IMO.

That said -
