The best 5 war movies of all time

1. Battleground
Long before Band of Brothers, there was this fine movie about the 101st at Bastogne.

2. 12 O'Clock High
The best movie on World War II bomber command and air combat.

3. Das Boot
The best submarine movie of all time.

4. Glory
Great Civil War movie, only Gettysburg comes close; with Birth of a Nation a close third.

5. Seven Samurai

Really a cross between war movie and a Robin Hood myth type movie, the best of any forgien movie ever made and one of the top 10 movies of all time. Remade many times since 1954.

Tora, Tora, Tora should not be counted out of the top 10 war movies of all time.

Unknown war movie that is good:

Arn part 1 & 2, not the cut version on ebay.

I may check it out. Looks like it may be good but I'm not a big fan of subtitles.

Turkey Burger I like your list...

Come and See is a good movie.

as is The Cranes Are Flying, the sub titles are a little off in both.

Paths of Glory is a fine anti war movie, which does get across the total lack of good commanding officers in the French Army in WWI.

The Thin Red Line is the only pick I would disgree with on your list.

Have you seen:
Ballad of a Soldier
Father of a Soldier

I rank those two above your Soviet movies.

I've been waiting for someone to mention this. I'm surprised it took this long but I'm glad only one person has it as their top 5. I didn't care much for it myself.

I totally forgot about it. For some reason, I still don't think of it as a war movie, even though it's probably more of a war movie than Courage Under Fire, which is a favorite of mine. So if it is a war flick, sorry Dan, it'd be in my top 5.

Haven't seen either but Ballad is on my netflix queue. I can't see how they can be better than Come And See, though. That movie hits you right in the gut and the ending tracking shot with Mozart's Lacrimosa playing is one of the most haunting endings I have ever seen.

You are really limiting yourself and missing out on an incredible amount of mindblowing cinema. We are talking about countries that have completely different perspectives on the world. Can you imagine a Russian filmmaker looking at the Second World War the same way as an American filmmaker? That's the beauty of world cinema and subtitles is a minor MINOR setback.

It was released only in select theaters then went to DVD which is why it is kind of overlooked.

Windtalkers was overlooked b/c it was bad. Real bad.
