I don’t see how that’s even possible since there’s been zero team activities

They spent all year with him last year, they know how well he’s got a grasp of the offense.

Or hey, maybe Cam was their target all along, they were just waiting for his price to drop, and they were never very confident in Stidham. Either way, I don't think they have a great deal of confidence in Stidham today, regardless of how they got to that feeling.

Seems like a risky move to sit on your target for 3 months if you have such low confidence in stidham as you claim.

If Cam was the target all along and the guy they for sure wanted over Stidham this whole time, they would’ve already signed him well before this.

They can want a player, but that doesn't mean they have to want him at any cost. You said yourself they got him for a deal. I mean it was a great value that they wouldn't have gotten in April.

This is not a black and white type of issue here. Them not signing Cam back then doesn't mean they had supreme confidence in Stidham and them signing Cam now doesn't mean that Stidham has no shot.

I don't really see it as risky. Belichick had the cache to wait it out. He would've been willing to roll through the season with Stidham but saw a chance for higher upside with Cam so he took it.

Which again means this was more about Cam than anything they thought about Stidham which is my whole point

You don’t bring in a guy like Cam to be the back up. Stidham has already sat for a season. When was the last time a guy sat more than one year then took over as a successful franchise QB?

Largely agree. That means if he's not clearly better than Stidham in camp, I think there's a really good chance they end up releasing Newton.

Mahomes sat for one year. Other than Jimmy G, who else sat for even 1 whole season recently who is a legitimate starter? Deshaun Watson, Russell Wilson, Sam Darnold, Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray all started year one.. as will Burrow and Tua.

Well, one thing is clear. Belichick and Patriots front office have no idea what they are doing. Never have and never will.
