Willians Astudillo is a very unusual baseball player

Astudillo is a backup 3B/C expected to make the Twins 25-man roster. He is pretty pedestrian in every area of the game, except one: he is freakishly difficult to strike out.
In 435 career AAA plate appearances, he's struck out only 19 times.
By comparison, Twins teammate Byron Buxton had 429 career AAA plate appearances, and struck out 115 times.
Due to this quality, Astudillo has developed somewhat of a cult-like following in the SABR/analytics community. They could barely contain their excitement when he was called up to the Twins late in 2018. He did not disappoint, striking out just 3 times in 97 plate appearances, while playing 3B, C, 2B, LF, CF, and pitcher (!). Oh, and he also hit .355 with 3 HR and 21 RBIs during the callup.
But the fun's not over yet. Astudillo played in the Venezuelan Winter League, and not only pimped a homer from one knee, but also struck out just 4 times in 261 plate appearances. Two of those four strikeouts were in the same game, by the same pitcher: an obscure backline prospect named Rick Teasley. This feat was so amazing to the statheads that he was interviewed on the Effectively Wild podcast. Teasley remembered the pitch sequences in vivid detail and was very cool about it.
BTW I saw that ProjectP has posted about Astudillo before, much respect!
Astudillo will be a pretty cool story to follow in 2019. Twins starting 3B Miguel Sano is battling an injury, which only increases Astudillo's odds of getting significant playing time.

He is the exact build I would expect from a guy who could do that and perfected one aspect of his craft. Curious how well it translates statistically. Thanks for the story, up vote.

Looks like the hitter version of that fat pitcher that has been around for ever.
Can't think of his name, has a weird haircut and delivery.

I wonder what would have happened if he did that against Ryan.

There was an article about about him today in my local Minneapolis StarTribune. Last year he faced 75 two-strike pitches. He let 27 of them go by and was never called out on strikes even one time. He swung at 48 of those pitches, fouled off 17, and put 28 in play. He only swung and missed three times.

It gets to be a positive-feedback loop with the ump: "he didn't swing, must be a ball."

Spring Training update
30 AB's, no strikeouts for our boy

He never walks, either, so this should not be that surprising.
Regardless, he's got nothing on Joe Sewell or Wee Willie Keeler.

Reminds me of Tony Gywnn

Random, ridiculous, and intriguingly awesome. Thanks for sharing.
Reminds me of one of my students, who went 180 consecutive class appearances, apparently, without using deodorant.

Astudillo ends the spring with 0 strikeouts in 51 at bats, and makes the Twins 25-man Opening Day roster.
Will he be in the starting lineup today? We’ll find out any minute...
