The 80's barefoot kicker.

There were like 3-4 guys in the NFL that kicked without a shoe.

Why did it go away? Why did it even exist? Some of these guys were crazy.

I think it existed because players at that time basically all wore the same team issued cleats. Some kickers didn’t like the way they performed and were better off barefoot. Nowadays, there are companies that make cleats specifically designed for kickers.

What I don’t get is why wear a cleat on the non-kicking foot? That doesn’t seem like it would feel very natural.

How about big cushioned elbow pads. You don’t see those anymore.

Zola Budd was one of a kind. I never could understand why kickers wore a shoe on their kicking foot that was 4 sizes too small. Barefoot I can understand to and extent because it had better feel.

I feel like Morten Andersen was the first one to do this.

No it was because you wanted thinnest area hitting hardest bone. Guys felt they made more solid contact. Adidas Copa and the Pelphry were popular shoes during barefoot kicking era. Kangaroo leather shoes are the best
