ESPN and the Networks are killing cable and satellite with all these billion dollar football deals. At some point viewers are just going to draw the line.

So with all these sports suspending or canceling their season, is ESPN still on the hook for paying the entirety of the TV deals? If the NBA playoffs are canceled does ESPN only pay out what they televise? Or do they pay for the entirety of the season upfront and don't get anything back if something unforeseen happens?

11 years ago the NFL and DirectTvs deal required payment to the league even if there was no season.

That was done with a strike season in mind, got rejected by the court in terms of their CBA deals, and the NFL had no such provision on any of their other broadcast rights deals.

I’d guess it’s unlikely that any league was able to get that from the major networks if the NFL couldn’t get it from anyone but 1 broadcaster.

Parks, Experiences and related products/services made up almost 37% of Disneys 71.54 billion in revenue in 2019. Those parks are closed now.

Media networks made up another 35%.

Studio entertainment 15.5%

I thought ESPN was making like 5 billion now but I might be wrong. They were at like 7 billion less than 5 years ago before it went south

But the point is, they’ll have them and have a nice cushion to fall on since Disney owns them

I wonder what Disney's overall revenue drop is. No one will be visiting Dworld/Land any time soon

That being said, ESPN only produces around 3 billion.

Does revenues vs PROFITS change those numbers at all?

Yeah it seems that my ESPN numbers were off. I was looking at cash-flow.

Interesting. I had no idea of how payments from the TV networks to the league works. I know there has been a few work stoppages before here and there, but I can't think of anything to this magnitude shutting down all sports like this in my lifetime before. Imagine all the bars and restaurants that heavily relied on sports to stay in business that are also missing out on a ton of revenue. It feels so damn weird with no sports for the last 2-3 weeks. And no end is in sight.
