Ok? Was simply providing context on what 14 million viewers means in Canada

Since OP apparently cared enough to start the thread but not post Travis’ tweets once they were sent 5 hours ago....

Clay Travis is a hero in this house!

I do not think you will ever find explicit racism from him.
Then where the hell do people come off saying he's racist? That's kinda what I'm driving at. If you're gonna call someone that, there should be more substance.
quote:
I remember with the racist sumlin letter. I give him the credit that never never once banged the "the sumlins are behind this" drum. But I do remember reading some of his tweets and mailbag articles on it and his comment sections and his reply tweets and it definitely painted a picture of the people who follow him and read his stuff
I read his stuff occasionally. So what picture does that supposedly paint? You're kinda being vague. And even in that instance you said he wasn't slandering the Sumlins. So your beef is with some commenters? You'll find those crazies on every tweet/article that gets even halfway into sociopolitical shite.
quote:
Maybe its unfair to him and the people who follow him, but given his propensity to go to the extreme with conservative talking points, then seeing the people who tend to est his stuff up, its hard not to make an easy assumption of it
I think you're being lazy by making such assumptions. I'm not some huge Clay Travis follower, but I've heard him speak and be interviewed and this picture you're painting of him being some unhinged fringe lunatic just doesn't hold water. He sticks out mainly because he's not vehemently anti-conservative like so many in the media, and while he's smart to parlay that into brand recognition of some sort for himself, that doesn't make him racist or anything.

quote:he actively thinks he is a major reason why ESPN is falling on hard times. He actually thinks he is ESPNs public enemy #1. I think hes pretty out there
and this picture you're painting of him being some unhinged fringe lunatic just doesn't hold water.
I dont think it's a coincidence that the very minute ESPN started going psycho with its liberal agenda, he immediately pushed back with a conservative one.
I dont actually think hes a racist. I think he simply does not like ESPN, is so unimaginably full of himself, and throws garbage at the wall that people on the fringe gravitate to. And since he is so full of himself, he likes that hes found a voice and an audience so he actively panders to them

Clay Travis is trash. Surprised he’s not with Barstool.

Protecting white daddy again. Not surprised.
You're literally only responding to me this way because you know my ethnicity. Which, of course, means you've behaved in a textbook racist manner.
Ironic given your assertion to which I responded

What makes you say Clay is trash?

It’s a schtick man lol.

Is it though? Hes literally written articles about it

This statement shows you don’t know shite about Clay Travis.

When I was still in the media I wrote a lot of ridiculous and opinion shite solely to keep up a persona and to cause reactions from the readers. It drives traffic which is what it’s all about.
It’s honestly no different than what Twitch streamers do. It’s a show to get views and clicks.
Now there is of course the possibility that it’s just who he really is. But he’s a smart dude and I think he knows what he’s doing.

How? Give me something specific. I tend to agree with the takes of his I see more often than not. Does that make me a closet racist? Whatever the hell that's supposed to mean?
quote:
it draws a direct link to the people he targets with his garbage.
Give me a substantive example of said "garbage." And if you wanna play the "his commenters are trash" card, that can go both ways for almost every media figurehead with a sizable social media presence.
quote:

Wouldn't call his agenda conservative. More libertarian than anything. So what if it was calculated? Again, he hardly had to compromise much at all given how hard left most media is these days.

Like what?

How?

Those tweets kind of say it all. Look at the ratings the last 10 years vs the 10 years before, the NBA is way up.
The NFL is a ratings monster, every sport is a niche sport compared to it right now. It's a straw man to say people were claiming NBA ratings are catching up to the NFL. The NBA has certainly increased its visibility in the Lebron era. If NFL bubble bursts for whatever reason the NBA is in a great spot.

I think this is more about you disliking him not being far left. Which is fine. Whatever. But it's kinda silly to say that because he isn't, that means he's automatically actively pandering to racists. I've listened to the guy talk at length on politics on several occasions. Never once have I heard him say anything racist.
It's kinda like people who say "MAGA" is racist and automatically project their bias that anyone who uses the phrase or wears the hat has to be racist. Because that's what they've already decided and therefore it must be true.
I just think that's kinda lazy is all.

This.
I think it's missing the point to compare it to the NFL when it's positioned itself so well globally in the post-Jordan era. Those numbers are interesting since that time period, though. I'm sure the explanation is quite nuanced but the raw numbers are intriguing.

quote:he absolutely played into the race aspect of the lebron situation
How? Give me something specific.
quote:the lebron James situation, his time spent on CNN over the trump/lavar ball situation, his belief that he is causing the downfall of ESPN, him organizing protesters over the Tennessee football hire because he didnt like the hire and was releasing quasi demand videos on twitter
Give me a substantive example of said "garbage
I will fully accept that I am probably being unfair simply due to the fact that I dont like the guy. Maybe it's not the best take in the world, but I view him like I view barstool. I dislike both and I will admit I'm pretty biased and I will take this L if I have to

Even if Clay is liberal deep down, I respect that he has tapped into the 20-50 year old conservative white guy sports fan, which you would think is a monster target market, but gets shite on by the ESPN -- and even Deadspin, who used to despise ESPN, has gone the SJW route and ignored these peeps.
