Stupid rule

Seriously though...what is the logic behind this rule? Is this just a CFB thing or is it the same in the NFL?

The receivers truly never had possession so you can’t advance something there’s no possession of
Easiest way to explain it

Same across the board I believe. Including high school.

I always thought it had something to do with the entire defense running at the returner and if it is muffed, it’s almost assuredly a TD because the return team isn’t watching the ball.

To stop players from calling a fair catch but then purposely "muffing" the punt so they can advance w/o worrying about getting lit up.

It’s been the rule in college and the NFL forever.
Essentially, a muffed punt is loose ball that nobody has possessed. It’s similar to a kickoff, which cannot be advanced if recovered by the kicking team. A live ball that has not been previously possessed cannot be advanced by the defensive team. It’s perhaps odd, but consistent.

I dont agree with the rule. But essentially because the receiving team never possesses the ball, it's still a punted ball not in possession by either team. If the punting team touches the ball first, it's "downed" and the receiving team gets the ball at that spot. If the receiving team touches it but never possesses it, the ball is still "downed" but the punting team remains in possession at that spot instead.
Now if you catch the punt, you're in possession and a fumble can be advanced.
