John Havlicek wasn't mediocre. Bill Russell said he was the best all round player he ever saw. Still a Top 20 scorer in NBA history.

That's why there is a sixth man award.

Hell, I think there should be an all bench team.

Pussification of America

John Havlicek got more than rewarded for his exceptional play?

NBA Finals MVP (1974)
13× NBA All-Star (1966–1978)
4× All-NBA First Team (1971–1974)
7× All-NBA Second Team (1964, 1966, 1968–1970, 1975–1976)
5× NBA All-Defensive First Team (1972–1976)
3× NBA All-Defensive Second Team (1969–1971)
NBA All-Rookie First Team (1963)
Consensus NCAA All-American Second Team (1962)

Again, there is no need for the award.

Pussification of America

most overused phrase on TD.

You realize he made the All-NBA second team and the All-Star team while coming off the bench right?

Sometimes, not all the best players are starters. Some fill a lead role in the second unit instead. This is why. Those players sacrifice for the good of the team and the best of the best get rewarded/

This is why there is an award.

If the player is good enough to earn 1st, 2nd, 3rd, team honors, then they earn them no matter if they start or not, that's my point.

I'm not saying that 6th men aren't important players on the team, but they shouldn't get their own award IMO.

Using your logic then why even have 2nd or 3rd team honors? Why have a Defensive POY when you have a POY/MVP?

I think the Defensive Player of the Year isn't a good award either, it's way too arbitrary fwiw.

I'm not saying that the 6th man role is useless, I'm saying the 6th man award is.

If the 6th man is productive enough to get 1st, 2nd, 3rd, team honors, then they get them.

Hondo never won a 6th man award because they didn't have it obviously, and he was still heavily honored.

So no, it doesn't, you just can't read.

But what makes the 6th man award different then anything that isn't 1st team, POY, etc?

Show me on the doll where the 6th man touched you sweetheart.

Jesus, there's a lot of people who don't understand basketball substitutions in this thread.

Because the first, second and third teams, are the top 15 players in the conference.

The 6th man is potentially the 61st best player in the conference.

Why aren't the 16th-60th best players honored?

you said the award rewards mediocrity so yes it does contradict what you said in your first post, unless you think Hondo's accomplishments were mediocre.

Someone has to win the award, it's a requirement even if they aren't deserving.

You aren't guaranteed to honor the best players.

This thread is stupid. If you don't understand substitutions and lineups then it is pointless to even explain the importance of the award. Just know the 6th man does not mean he is the 61st best player.

He COULD be the 61st best player. I didn't say he was.

Why should a starter NOT GET ANY AWARD even though he may be a better player and contributor than some 6th man from a different team?

Not fair, and doesn't honor the best players that year.

The top 15 players should be honored, and the All-Freshman Team, along with a Freshman of the Year, Player of the Year, and Coach of the year.

They should attempt to be as fair as possible, I'm just trying to bring attention to this egregious situation running rampant in all of basketball.

Same reason MLB gives the Rolaids Relief Man award to some pitcher coming off the bench

Where would you rank Bogut, or Boozer or Marion, as the ______ best player in the league?

Top 15?
