The obvious and most commonly given answer is that the defenses are much faster and the spread would not be effective. People said the spread offense wouldn't work in the SEC either for the same reason, but Florida won a NC with a modified version of it, and Arkansas was successful with the "Wildcat" formation which is similar to the spread offense. My opinion is that the NFL QBs get paid too much to risk them getting hurt by running the football as much as is required in the spread offense. BUT, I believe that the spread offense could be effective if a team would devote themselves to it completely, that it could be effective using the right QB. Just my opinion.

its a gimmick offense, it would be exposed quickly in the nfl. patriots use a form of it as do colts and some others. eventually it will get shut down in the colleges.

To be honest, I think a lot of it is arrogance. The NFL is ultra conservative and coaches seem very hesitant to go against the grain.

Hell, look at the Run and Shoot. It was looked down upon by a lot of NFL "experts" who pointed to the fact that teams like Houston never won a Super Bowl. But the fact was, Houston went to the playoffs seven straight years using that offense, while a lot of teams running conventional offenses never sniffed the post season. Buffalo went to 4 straight SBs using a modified version of it. No other teams in NFL history has done that. From that standpoint, I'd say the offense worked. But you listen to NFL experts now and they'd say it was a flop.

A team is not going to pay their QB that much money to have him take a beating. 5 years would be the length of a QB career.

What are you calling the Spread? If it is Florida's version, that is a single wing modified from the 40's with some passing and veer and load option installed. The pros run same sets just not the options but same passing game with a little more on sight adjustments. Plus the hases being narrower you can create more space by evening a defense out.

Basically it comes down to this. In college the spread option works when your QB is a better athlete than the backside DE. That does not happen in the pros.

The Run n Shoot did work in the pros actually,

Detroit
Buffalo (they called it the K Gun)
Atlanta

And they are still using variations of it now the 4 and 5 Wide sets are the Run n Shoot.

The answer is, because the QB's get killed in the pros. When you spread the field out, it gives the defense an easy shot at your QB. When Spurrier tried it, his QBs were constantly on their backs. There's much more defensive speed in the NFL, thus the defenses take advantage of the lack of protection.

The DLs are too good in the pros. When you use the spread it doesnt leave a RB or TE to pass block.

Spurrier did not run the "Spread". He has always based his offense off the running game. His intention was to hit you big 1 or 2 times a game but control LOS using Taylor, Rhett, etc.

VY has been using a version of it, Vick's best years used a spread running type offense.
