you will never be able to convince me that we need to play it at every fricking JV high school soccer game, for example

I had to referee a high school soccer game at a small private school south of Montgomery. All the players were on the field and I was about to blow the whistle to kick off when they started playing the national anthem. Legit made me mad.

It's optional but choosing the other option is fairly socially unacceptable in our society. We can flashback just two weeks and see sometimes even participating isn't good enough.

This I don't know.... But it is and always will be played at sporting events... If someone doesn't feel the need to stand??? I really don't care... I ALWAYS stand and always will... So be it..........

Probably the best answer.

It just is.

(Which speaks to why we aren't more informed about what it means)

I remember walking Arlington and thinking half the people who are buried here didn't even really have sports...I've always been bothered by the sports/nationalism connection. Save it for the boys buried in the cemetery so it still has real meaning. Not just for show...but heartfelt for the guys who died for it.

why? because

Son, we live in a world that has walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with guns. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinburg? I have a greater responsibility than you could possibly fathom. You weep for Santiago, and you curse the Marines. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know. That Santiago's death, while tragic, probably saved lives. And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves lives. You don't want the truth because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that wall, you need me on that wall. We use words like honor, code, loyalty. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said thank you, and went on your way, Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a weapon, and stand a post. Either way, I don't give a damn what you think you are entitled to.

Thats why

Right.

And give them the respect they deserve.

Make the anthem special again.

Playing the anthem at a J.V. basketball game is not honoring anyone, it's minimizing the sacrifice.

You should have to earn it to be played in your honor.

I think Olympians earn it in sports, but very few do.

Actually what would be awesome would be for the military closest to the 49ers stadium get with the local police and set something up to dress up about a thousand guys in black riot gear clothes with machine guns then run into the stadium before the game and control of the stadium by pointing guns at everyone and telling them to sit down. Then fake the shooting five or six people in the head for holding an American Flag at the 50 yard line. You know make a big show of it with a microphone, go all ISIS video style. Then force everyone at gunpoint to sing the German National Anthem while doing the Hitler salute or make everyone bow to the West or some shite........

then calmly a General from the Army walks out and shuts it all down in the middle of it all, all the men standdown and leave, and he simply says

"Ladies and Gentlemen, that was all just faked... it sucked didn't it? But you don't have to live like that thanks to the men and women who have died so that your pansy asses can sit in that seat and drink beer and watch a fricking game without worrying about the actual shite other people all across the globe do have to worry about.

And that's why we play the fricking Star Bangled Banner before games, to remind assholes like Colin Kaepernick. Enjoy your day of freedom."

BTW, this would only work in San Francisco, fans in Texas might actually go all Red Dawn and take over the stadiums.

Why do you want to sing the German National Anthem?

I don't. Was that angry teenager post?

Anthem shouldn't be mandatory except for people who deserve it.

Sorry soccer-mom extremtigertanatic...but I don't care if your 4-year old scores a goal and I don't want to diminish the anthem because your child has to pee-pee.

Follow Clay Travis as well? Do you have any of your own thoughts? Or you just one of those that transfers Twiiter and Reddit to TD? This site is going to shite because of posters like you IMO.

There was a picture on one of the threads here yesterday that showed a Marine who had lost both his legs, presumably in action. He was in full uniform, pants legs pinned up, and he was propped up at full attention in a wheel chair , strict salute, while they were playing the National Anthem over the hospital's loud speaker. That is why I stand & sing our country's National Anthem. Choose to be unpatriotic or otherwise, but do not knock those who are passionate about what it stands for. Take a long walk through Arlington National Cemetary if you need a better understanding. Those vets buried there would love to be able to stand for the National Anthem at your "fricking JV high school soccer game".

To deepen the impact of propaganda. Music does it very effectively.

Who cries every time?

I mean dude that really wasn't my point. I bet those guys would love to stand all day and walk around like I have to do at work, but we don't play the national anthem every morning. I bet they would love to walk around my yard and mow the lawn, but I don't play the national anthem before I do that.

And in no way is that a sign of disrespect. I can't just play the national anthem before I do anything that wounded or dead soldiers fought for because then I wouldn't be doing anything BUT listening to the national anthem all day.
