Why dont garbage free throw shoots try to use the backboard? Seems like these big men would have a better time hitting that then trying to aim the ball at the hoop. If it can increase your free throw percentage any, then it seems like it would be worth it.

yes, you are correct.

There are a few ways to shoot free throws and most of them are no good at any of them, and really only try one technique, in their entire lives.

they dont practice free throws (with the feedback of someone who can actually make free throws at 85% or better).

they only have time for dunk practice.

It's not easier, especially for a big man.

If they don't have the touch or aim to make the shot in a normal fashion what makes you think their accuracy and touch would improve if they intentionally tried to bank in every free throw?

exactly... they'll be trying to hit a mark that's further away that the one they're already aiming at...

I would tell a guy who's got terrible touch with FTs to error on the side of being long... if you're short on your shots, there's a 0% chance it goes in, but if you're long the ball can bounce your way.

Why don't they shoot underhand?

Cause it doesn't look cool

I'm a firm believer you can teach ANYONE to shoot free throws, some guys just won't try every method

I think the granny shot is the better question. It allows seven footers to shoot with a good arc. And the answer is: It looks dorky.

yao ming was a career 83% from the line, so no excuses for big men. Also shows how much of an incredible touch that big bastard had.

Because it gives them something easy to aim at. I bank in free throws all the time, it is easy. But Ive never had to do it under pressure.
