Holdover from pre game clock days.

It was designed to warn teams there are 2 minutes remaining in the half. Shocking, I know.

It's not going anywhere because of commercials.

give the refs one last time to reconvene and assess how they're going to achieve the predetermined outcome

I’m just glad it’s not in college... it’s a super shite rule. We might have lost that auburn game if there was a 2 minute warning.

because College Football is a better product, and doesn't need a "warning" that the half is nearly over.

As recently as the 60s, the stadium clock was not official and was usually an analog clock. Official time was kept on a stop watch by one of the officials. Of course, there was no clock to warn the qb he was about to get a penalty for delay. (another interesting piece of trivia - the coin toss was not conducted on the field. It happened under the stands about 10 minutes before the game).

1) They were jealous of the 7th inning stretch
2) 3 minute warning doesn't quite have the same cachet

I like the 2 minute warning for the NFL and I like that it isn't part of college football. The clock stopping on first downs in college and not in the NFL is my reasoning behind this.
