There are so many programs with absolutely piss poor STs in college. And I'm not talking about having good kickers. Those are clearly harder to come by, but coverage teams and protections are routinely shite.

In the NFL, the best coaches and teams almost always have elite STs.

It literally just won a playoff spot for Clemson.

How do you know this was caused from coaching and not just player execution?

No clue, but the drop off in special teams between Greg McMahon under Orgeron to Polian and then nobody under Kelly has been jarring. LSU has literally lost games under Kelly because the special teams are so shite. Makes no sense to me to ignore an entire phase of the game.

To be fair in this case, Clemson happened to get a Clemson legacy freshman kicker with a rocket for a leg. Not something you can just go get

STs was the difference in the Florida game and thus determined who was in the SEC CG today

They don’t. They all coach the same shite, you either have enough good players on those units or you don’t.

It was just the FG though. The kickoff return is what set up the FG in the first place.

One reason LSU was able to be so decent under Les for so long despite shite offense was because of great special teams.

Va Tech had arguably the best ST running for a twenty year period under Frank Beamer and had one BCS game appearance. Notre Dame blocked SEVEN punts in 2022 and went 9-4.

Offenses and defenses have vastly different philosophy's. Special teams are no different.
