Why do athletes put JR on the back of their uniform?

I know that they have the same name as their dad (or son), but that isn't their name - it's a suffix. If they can put a suffix, why not a prefix? Mr. Brees could be on the back of the jersey soon. Why not?
If Ken Griffey Jr can leave it off, the rest of them can as well.

My favorite is this one....ya know--to avoid confusion in case little Mohamed Jr comes running onto the field.

Maybe to honor their father?
Honestly, with the rate of single parenthood with African-American families, I'm all for these athletes honoring the presence of their fathers in their lives.

I think if they actually know who their father is they put Jr on the uniform.

Uhhh, 99.9% of the time a suffix is part of someone's legal name (noted on legal documents, driver's license, passport, etc.) unlike a prefix.
This is silly.

To avoid confusion.
It can cause problems for the defense when Will Fuller, his father, his grandfather, his great-grandfather and his great-great grandfather are on the field at the same time.

The real answer is that Odell Beckham did it first and he became a superstar, so they all wanna be like him.

Interestingly enough, Ken Griffey Jr and Sr played on the same team at the same time and didn't have it on their uniforms. The other team must have been so confused as to which was which.

Maybe. But I think it's really something that turned into a fad. You rarely saw it....then a few players did it...then suddenly there were tons of "jr", then you got the even more edgy "sr" or "III", then Willie Snead said "hold my beer" and broke out the "IV".
So IMO, it's just a bunch of copycats. It's harmless and I don't care, but it's hard not to miss.
