Why didn't Craig MacTavish wear a helmet?

And how did the league allow it until 1997?

Did he have to sign some assumption of the risk clause with the NHL? Didn't Lindros go out because of concussions?

That's like Brett Favre in the 90's not wearing a facemask.

Any player who entered the league after June 1, 1979 had to wear a helmet, but any player who signed his first pro contract before then could opt out if they signed a waiver.

He played before helmets were mandatory and then was grandfathered in once they became mandatory.

Same thing has happened with visors, in like 10 years 99% of players will have them and a few holdouts won’t.

It’s crazy to think that as recently as the early 70’s that some goalies didn’t wear face masks.

It seems nuts to me too. He probably came up his whole career not wearing one, and I suppose it became too much of a hinderence when he tried wearing one. I remember him at the end of his career with the Blues, and he looked completely out of place as the only skater on the ice without a helmet.

This is the how.

The why is he was one of the biggest douche bags to ever skate in the NHL. An epic attention whore and a lousy human being (he killed a woman while driving drunk). A role player on the ice and a nothing as a coach.

But had he ever put on a helmet no one would have ever known/remembered his name.

But what's weirder is he had to wear one at one point in his career because he played College Hockey and helmets were mandatory back then.

And then he gets to the NHL and is like frick it, I ain't wearing no helmet anymore.

It just seems weird...like wearing a batting helmet in H.S. for 4 years and then you get to the Minors and you're like, frick it, I don't need a helmet.
