Why did Monday Night Football start getting the worst games of the week?

It used to be that Monday Night Football always had one of the better games of the week, now it seems to get at least lackluster matchups. Tomorrow night you get a matchup of two of the worst teams in the league, the Giants and 49ers.
I guess ESPN picks it’s games for the year before the season starts, so then they just have to bet on what they think could be good games.
It’s sad, MNF isn’t even something to look forward to on Monday’s anymore.

Crap matchups and crap tv crew. SNF has been the new MNF for years now and TNF is creeping up as well. Fox is doing a good job this year.

When it left ABC after the 05 season and NBC got SNF.

When Fox spent $billion to get Thursday night contract.

I used to watch mnf nearly every week.
But this crew makes me rather go do something else or turn on the radio.

Yeah I laughed at that yesterday. Giants and 49ers blow so they have to hype 2 skill players to get people to watch.

quote:Yep. Bills, Titans and Jaguars were all playoff teams last year. 49ers were undefeated after they got Jimmy G. I’m sure ESPN picked MNF matchups expecting those teams to be better than than they’ve been

I miss Pat Sumarall and John Madden

I just don’t understand the bitching about the crew every week. Who gives a frick. I barely notice them.
On another note the 49ers should not be on 2 weeks on a row.

ESPN doesn’t choose who plays
The NBC contract is what made SNF bigger.

It's football. That's enough to look forward to.

I mean I don't watch it. That's one of the reasons why.
The other being horrible matchup.

The Monday night football package now is basically the old Espn Sunday night football slate of games, pre NBC.
When ABC disbanded its sports division in 2003-ish, the entire tv football landscape was shaken up.
The NFL did not want its premiere football package relegated to a cable channel. So, NBC stepped up, which had not had NFL football since fox got the NFC rights in 1994.
So the NFL made a deal. NBC would essentially get the old ABC MNF package, only it would be moved to Sunday night and then NBC would also get a prime time highlight show just like ESPN/ABC used to have with NFL primetime, as a lead in to the big game. That was as all part of the package,
That's why ESPNs NFL primetime became "the blitz" ...they lost that show as it was beforehand.
Espn was now left with no other option. They desperately wanted NFL football broadcast on their network, so the NFL basically screwed them. They paid like 1.9 billion for the old dogshit package of games they used to have, only now on Monday night, while NBC paid essentially half of that for the absolute premiere NFL package on tv.
CBS and fox stayed out of the fray because they and the NFL both liked what they had. The league was and still is about getting its best games to as many eyeballs as possible. And they make special concessions to NBC because of that. That's why they can flex into so many great games,
And ESPN does not help itself any because they HAVE to have NFL rights to program half or more of their shows.
Espn can request as many great games as they want, but it comes after NBC fox and CBS all get theirs. And now, with fox taking over Thursday night, and the NFL trying to hype those games up more with better matchups, ESPN gets even worse slates of games now.
Basically, they are the stepchild of NFL tv football broadcasts. The NFL doesn't respect them as a network, from all the signs it sends. Or it just takes advantage of them because it can. Either way, that's why the games are so bad.
