Because, collectively, we are a nation of idiots. The media knows this. They deliver content and tell us that we SHOULD be offended by it, and amazingly, some of us are . That = RATINGS!!!!!!!!!! Ratings = commerical time slot sales!!!!! It is about money, pure and simple.

I think this factor exists, sure, but it isn't the only factor or even close to the biggest factor. There has been no real media pressure either way on this issue. In fact, there is so little pressure one way or another that networks are allowing their broadcasters to decide for themselves how to deal with the nickname professionally without the boundaries of a stated policy on the matter.

The idea that the media are telling people what to think here is absurd in the form you imply it; you obviously think that the name change campaign is getting more than its share of the airwaves than the opposing side is getting. I've heard WAY more of you than I've heard of them on this issue, as I told someone else earlier in the thread.

You are in the vocal majority, and you're getting the majority of press. The vocal minority is getting its fair share of air time, the way I see it. I don't think either side is treated unfairly in the media. We're seeing both sides exposed constantly.

The Washington Post has announced today they will no longer use the name Redskins in their coverage. I think this is the tipping point. The Post is the largest local paper, and if they stop referring to the team by name, it starts hurting the brand locally.

It's just a matter of time before the Skins change the name now. Might as well tear off the Band aid and get it over with. Then move on. All we're doing now is just dragging the fight out. It's not a big deal, just change it so people will move on to something else.

Fwiw, it's just the editorial board that will stop using the word. The news/sports section will still use it as of now.

Oh. That certainly changes things. Then this will continue for another decade or so...

Sigh.
