Why are Left Handers used only at 1st Base

Serious question.
I understand not using them at 3rd and using them at 1st. But why not C, SS, and 2nd?

Impossible throw to first without doing a pirouette on balls to their right. Same thing with a 2B covering on a double play.

Because it's way easier to throw across your body when you catch a ball in front of you.

A lefty would have to stop and turn to throw over to 1st. Can't afford that wasted time.

Because think about a lefty fielding ground balls at short to his left and right and how much more difficult it is to throw to first or turn 2.
Think of them at second turning 2 when covering the base.

What about balls to their left?

Wow.
Also has to to with making the tag easier and quicker during pick offs. Ease of making throws is the key.

Are the majority of balls hit to a SS to his left or right? If left, then the throw would be easier.
I'm not being a dick. I think we have just been conditioned to believe it. When left handers play little league baseball, they are automatically eliminated from 4 of the 9 positions. Whose to know how many left handed Omar Visquel's have been undiscovered.
BTW...I'm left handed if you haven't figured it out.

This is one of the reasons baseball is a "flawed" game.
I realize that size, shape, speed and other physical attributes are necessary in any sport, but is there another game that eliminates a portion of the population at certain positions because of this particular attribute?

The angles of IF do not pertain to Catcher. A lefty catcher wouldn't have to pivot any more than a righty. But the rule in baseball is simple:
If you have a strong enough arm to throw out runners trying to steal 2B and you throw left handed, you are a pitcher.
Babe Ruth is the best example. He played catcher in HS throwing left handed. When he signed with Boston they moved him to pitcher.

I addressed this.

So does this thread boil down to you being mad that you didn't get to play short in little league?

Well, they can play all of the OF positions.

Serious question.
You have just come up with a revolutionary idea. :roll eyes:
The reason is because turning a dp with a left handed middle infielder is nearly impossible. You do understand that, right?

Throwing to 2nd maybe, but it would be a huge disadvantage for 1'to have to throw to third. And they're doing that infinitely more than throwing behind the runner at 1st. I can't believe this is a serious thread.

Leftys can't catch for 2 reasons-
On a throw down to 2nd on a steal, their arm would be right in line with a right handed batter. The same issue that righty catchers have with lefty batters, but there's obviously far more righty hitters
And the throw down to 3rd on a steal is almost impossible. The time it took to shift your feet and turn your shoulders would stop you from ever throwing anyone out.
