Yes, Tulane is a better academic institution than LSU. But is it ~$50,000 a year better? I would say "hell no".

What I can't understand is why ULL fans are so ashamed to be associated with the city of Lafayette. I always get the impression that natives of Lafayette are quite proud of their city, so it's a bit confusing as to why ULL fans don't feel the same way.

No one is ashamed of Lafayette. The city is what makes the school such a great place to attend. But it's all about perception. The school just got recognized as a national university according to US News. Getting away from the city designation helps the school grow outside of just the region.
Again, the school isn't changing its name. I don't see why it is so hard for some people here to understand that.
