I was pretty young but I can still remember this dunk over Louisville. Loved the guy.
What is so special about that dunk?

"except for Rex"---exactly. All SEC his first two seasons and then goes pro. He was drafted in the first round. His rookie year he averaged double digits in points. Averaged double digits essentially every year after that, including the playoffs According to your reasoning, JJ was a better college player than Michael Jordon bc JJ scored more points in the ACC and played 4 years. It's not about stats , it's about game. Rex clearly had a better all around game at both the college and pro levels.

If Jordan was only as good as Chapman, then yea JJ would have been the better 'college' player.
The question is who was better in college, JJ's senior season compared to Rex's sophomore season makes this kind of a non-argument. I guess that's why you had to bring the NBA into this discussion.

Again, "statistically" JJ's senior season was better than any of Rex or MJ's college seasons. The thread is not "who had better stats in college". If you don't think Rex had a better all around game in college, then you either did not see him play or don't know much about basketball.

All-around game is code for 'if I can't justify it with numbers, I'll make something up.'
JJ averaged 27 points to Rex's 19. Their assist, rebound, and steal numbers are similar. How much better all-around can he be if the numbers don't reflect it? I guess you're trying to make Rex out to be some transcendent defender who didn't put up great defensive numbers. But considering Rex was a horrible defender in the NBA (taking a page out of your book here) then I think it's safe to say he wasn't that type of player in college.

To be fair I think a lot of people in this thread may not have been old enough to see Rex in college. Heck, I'm 37 and I was in maybe 3rd or 4th grade during Rex's last year at Kentucky. I just remember seeing him at Coleman Coliseum vs. Alabama and being in awe of his ability. That was also back when basketball seemed so much bigger at Alabama and the games were so much louder than they are now. May have been because I was a kid but it was always an amazing atmosphere when Kentucky came to town when I was a kid.

It's got nothing on this one LINK
They are about the same to me. Both of them slammed it with two hands. WOW!
I know that Rex was very athletic and had great leaping ability, but the dunk that was linked was just a run of the mill two handed dunk on nobody.

You win, JJ was the best player ever in the ACC and better than Rex. He was better than Jordon , Worthy, Kenny Smith, len bias, Ralph sampson, Tim Duncan , David Thompson , Christian laettner, Bobby hurley, grant hill and Vince Carter because he scored more points than they did. No sense in debating this with someone whose entire argument is based upon JJ's point per game average.
JJ was and is a one dimensional player. He could shoot lights out, there is no doubt. He was not very good and creating his own oppurtunities as evidenced by his play against LSU in the tourney. He had/has a VERY limited game.

Ok, keep beating the hell out of that strawman, I'll be waiting for you to respond to my actual post in the meantime.

seriously, JJ was nat'l player of the year in college. He clearly had a more decorated college career, and on any list of the greatest college players of all time, you would find him before Chapman.
Maybe if Chapman stayed longer, he would have surpassed JJ's achievements, but he didn't, its irrelevant. That also begs the question of why the JJ/Chapman comparison was made to begin with.. kind of odd. I mean I would understand if it was jj vs adam morrison or something but this is kind of strange

Most people that say JJ are probably too young to even of watched Chapman play. Chapman was better and yes I was watching him in his college days. JJ had a better career cuz he stayed longer.

So you are saying JJ was better in college.

Having a better college career and being better aren't mutually exclusive. JJ had a better overall career because he was great for 4 years. Chapman only played 2 years. Having seen them both, I still have to say Chapman was the better overall player.
JJ was one of the greatest pure shooters (3 pointers and free throws) that ever played the college game. Rex Chapman was just a small notch below JJ as a pure shooter but could create his shot from outside or inside off the dribble at a level JJ simply couldn't.

Redick scored just as much inside the arc on roughly the same number of shots as Chapman. Chapman's superior ability to get his own shot earned him roughly 3 free throw attempts a game, Redick was taking 7.
And Redick wasn't just a chucker by his senior season, he averaged 1.5 points per shot to Chapman's 1.3. You can say that Redick was just a shooter and Chapman had a more complete offensive game, but JJ was the vastly superior scorer, which is all you're really comparing.
