Lott switched to the safety position in 1985 because of his punishing tackling ability and ballhawking skill.

He was playing a WHOLE lot of Safety in 1984. Look at the playoffs and the game against Miami in the SB.....

Ed Reed, the guy just has disgusting instincts and before his body gave out, amazing athleticism.

I'd have Lott at the top and Woodson and Reed just a bit behind tied for second.

Not sure if he's the best I've seen play, but John Lynch is probably my favorite football player of all time. He even knocked out his brother-in-law out of a game once.

Didn't see Dennis Smith's name mentioned either. 6 time Pro Bowler and I saw him play his entire career and he would flat lay the lumber on you.

Yep.
Atwater appeared in 7 straight pro bowls. He was a monster back there.

Scary to think Atwater and Smith were a tandem out there. Wow.

I enjoyed watching Tommy Myers, and later Frank Wattelet(sp?) with the Saints. David Fulcher of the Bengals was a load..235lb strong safety. Larry Wilson,in the NFLHoF, and Johnny Robinson, who should be. Kenny Easly, who is mostly forgotten.

And Ronnie Lott The frickin MAN!
