saban wasn't as bad in miami as people want to make him out ot be. He wasn't great, but he wasn't abysmal. There are plenty of coaches in the league right this minute that were much worse.
It's also a silly comparison since saban was in the NFL 2 years and caroll has been for like 15. Of cousre caroll is going to be more of an accomplished NFL coach with that disparity.

Carrol's first NFL stint was similar to Saban's, good-ish but nowhere near great

As Ivan Maisel or another rival coach in the Pac 10 said at the time, USC got busted for the crime of USC-ness. Being popular and having celebrities on the sidelines. That was their big crime. Nothing connected USC to the Reggie Bush agent scandal. In fact, it was against USC's interests to invite such poachers. They stole their star player. USC was punished because it was loosey-goosey fun and Carroll was the catalyst and the NCAA thought being a fun program and having celebrities at practices was a violation even though it wasn't against the rules. Never thought he'd be a good NFL coach because it was all rah-rah in College and NFL players are immune to that. But he made it work. He's said that his transformation into becoming a great coach was reading the Inner Game of Tennis.
