They won’t be going to the AAC, that’s for certain.

From following along on twitter, large base of sun belt schools do not want them joining due to their AD or president basically dogging on the sun belt two years ago… personally, I’d love to see them join and battle out with UL, ULM and SoMiss.

So my question is, if AAC and SBC don’t accept them, do they go independent?

They’ll go Sun Belt. They’re realistically nothing more than a Sun Belt school. Tech people just think they’re better than what they really are.

Yes. Should I think I’m an engineer, even though I’m nothing more than a scaffold builder?

You can’t possibly think CUSA is going to survive this…

The AAC could do worse, honestly

La Tech has been a decent overall athletics program - good football, both the men’s/women’s hoops teams are usually solid, and a really good baseball program. Their facilities aren’t bad either

The AAC did worse; they added UNT, Rice, UTSA, Charlotte and FAU.
UAB was the only addition the AAC made that was good.
Even if the AAC didn't add Tech, why would you add those other schools?
People say markets but those schools don't even draw in their market.
Imagine Wichita St., Memphis or Temple playing basketball at UTSA or FAU's gymnasium. I say gymnasium and not arena because that's what they play in. Seriously, many Louisiana High Schools have better baseball and basketball facilities than UTSA and FAU.
UNT doesn't even have a baseball team. The football stadium at Rice is falling apart. You can't even sit in the upper deck at Rice's football stadium for safety reasons. That's how bad it is.
Everything about those adds makes no sense.

It isn't the school, its the city, Ruston. Just too small a market.

But those other schools don't even make a blip in their markets.

UNT has 42,000 students in the over 7 million DFW area, and can't even draw 15,000 people to their games. I think their highest attended game was in 2018 when Tech played there.
Markets are way over rated.

So….the Southland?

Because the Belt is taking 3 from CUSA. Plus JMU.

Why would the Fun Belt want 4 teams in such a small geographic area with USM, ULM, and ULL?

Louisiana Tech is going to stick it out in C-USA with whatever remains. This isn’t the end of realignment. The program just has to focus on continuing to better itself and continue the success in the courts. The AAC added a steam pile of shite and it won’t take them long to realize they made the same mistake Conference USA did a while back with those exact same schools. They’ll be some moves at the top of the chain again and LA Tech needs to make sure it is still a valuable G5 program. Dr. Eric Wood has one of the toughest jobs in college athletics right now though.

The AAC added exactly what that conference is and always will be. It’s the Metro all over again. Giant universities in major metropolitan areas.

No matter what LaTech does, you will NEVER be an institutional fit for the AAC. You could be Harvard for academics, and you still wouldn’t fit the demographics of that league.

Failing to realize that as an administration and not trying to mend 20 plus years of broken fences and burned bridges will put LaTech as an independent until the next round a realignment happens. Which will be 8-10 years down the road.

Can LaTech survive, probably so. But you’ll lose bowl tie ins, auto-bids, and ally’s. All because of the arrogance surrounding your program (which is a very solid program).

It’s a sad day, because LaTech to the SBC is a cultural and institutional fit. The SBC will also be the strongest G5 conference within 5 years. LaTech could have strengthened that, but would rather take their ball and go home like a petulant child than build something that fits them better.

CUSA was always doomed to fail.

Because unlike the P4 giants, money is tight. So a relatively compact league saves money, creates fan excitement which in turn creates money.
