What I notice with most Americans that don't like "soccer" is that they never have a clear cut reason for why they don't like it. It's always: "oooh it's soooo boring" or my personal favorite (which ironically shows the ignorance of the speaker) "oh it's a game that's played by communists and foreigners". Their arguements are weak and anytime you try to explain why YOU like it they automatically fall back on "Oh well soccer fans are gay anyway".
They always insist on comparing athletes between sports without even realizing that American football and "soccer" do not require the same skill set. American football requires you to be bigger, taller, have a very strong upperbody in order to take hits and all that stuff. Whereas "soccer" requires more endurance because you are on the pitch for 45 straight minutes at a time, and it requires you to be very quick with your feet and have a very strong lower body.
We can compare all day, fact of the matter is I enjoy "soccer" and I will always enjoy it. Do I care if you enjoy it? No. Will I try to get you to enjoy it? No. It just gets annoying because the very same people who claim that "soccer" is boring are the same people who will spend 3-4 hours at a baseball game and laud the team for winning 1-0. It makes no sense. americans don't like "soccer" because it's foreign. Period.

That may be the best post I've ever made.
That's not saying a lot i guess.

Well, jump higher and stronger goes to NBA players obviously, but I still contend that the fastest footballers could keep up with the fastest basketball players. I mean Thierry Henry is pretty fast. So is Rommedahl.

Basketball players are not more athletically talented than most soccer players. I'm sorry. It's not even comparable.

I enjoy soccer and honestly don't care if other people don't. I think soccer fans have a real problem trying to convert people by claiming that soccer is somehow the equivalent of sports vegetables: watch it, it's good for you.
But I will never, ever, EVER understand the people who jump in the soccer and hockey threads to say they hate the sport. OK, we get it. Shut up. I hate NASCAR, but I don't tell NASCAR fans their sport sucks. I don't like it, but there are people who do. The world is big enough for sports I like and don't like.

I mean I think LeBron is a living legend in the NBA. The guy is insane, but comparing athletes from different sports is stupid because they have to be good at totally different things
you can always compare athleticism
speed, strength, quickness, explosiveness based on your height (and weight to a lesser extent)

right. I agree.

personally I've never tried to convert anyone, generally that sort of rhetoric stems from someone , like you described above, insulting the game, and provoking a reaction through their trolling. then that usually devolves into a pointless argument over semantics and pure opinion.
it's a dumb argument to try and compare the quality of a sport

running as fast as you can while maintaining your balance with a defender draped on your back is athleticism. stopping on a dime is athleticism, going off a full sprint into a diving header is athleticism. biking or scissoring a soccer ball is athleticism. basically, watch messi.

the two examples you tried nullifying are athleticism
adept coordination of your own body, and the ball as a constiuent elemtn of your own movement, is the product of athletic discipline.

Leauxgan, I actually think the soccer fans on this board are really good at not trying to claim soccer is "better" or that everyone who doesn't watch just doesn't understand. I think we should convert people to soccer by simply showcasing the sport. Get people to watch the Spain-England game, for example.

By that logic (speed, explosiveness, quickness, not so much strength in soccer compared to their height and weight), soccer has some very comparable athletes.
On the same note, Chris Paul is fast, can dribble and shoot very skillfully. Is he not athletic?

agreed. balance is an oft-forgotten aspect of athleticism

agreed

going off a full sprint into a diving header is athleticism
now it's becomming less athleticism and more skill
quote:

it involves athleticism, but this is mostly skill

contorting your body to do those things in mid air is athleticism.

he's athletic, but not for his passing, dribbling, or shooting
he's athletic b/c he may be the quickest person in the world for a 6-0 person. he's also insanely fast

it involves athleticism, but it's a skill
athleticism can be tested by anyone, anywhere. it's a measure of your body's natural movements and abilities
if you have to learn how to do it, it's a skill
Posted on 2/12/09 at 7:54 pm to SlowFlowPro
it's a combination of things. you can kick a soccer ball hard and not be all that athletic, but if you want to kick a soccer ball hard while your body is parallel to the ground, that's extreme athleticism. it does take skill to do it but you have to a pretty athletic person to do it.
