I don't know if it fits the title "phenomenon", but I vividly recall, as if it were yesterday, watching Jean van de Velde play the worst executed
and worst thought-out hole in the history of golf at the British Open in 1999...And it just happened to be the 72nd hole with a 3 shot lead.

Bad decision to hit driver off the tee, bad decision to hit big club out of rough on the 2nd shot, which ultimately hit a wall and ricocheted back about 50 yards into deep rough. Then he chunked his 3rd shot into the Burn...and proceeded to go down into the water as if he were going to hit the ball.

He finally took his penalty shot, hit his 5th into the bunker, then somehow gather himself to hit out of the sand and 1-putt to "salvage" triple bogey and go to the playoff, which he ultimately lost.

And did nobody mention the OJ Bronco chase scene/murder trial??

Ken Griffey Jr going for the consecutive games HR streak in 93 he ended up tying at 8. There were a few others who came close but his seemed to be all over the tv and newspapers when he was at 5. I have the papers somewhere at my parents house.

I can't believe no one has mentioned the most obvious one.

It literally was all ANYONE could talk about for weeks.

You had DUDES at figure skating/Olympic watch parties.

It was nuts.

Greg Maddux had a 51 consecutive innings pitched without a walk streak that I followed closely.

Earnhardt dying at Daytona in 2001..the wife and I went to the Pepsi 400 that year and when we got to the track it was so eerie..you just could feel Junior was going to win. I told her before the race that NASCAR gave him the restrictor plate with bigger holes.

I was not a Dale Sr fan at all, but when Jr won it was a very surreal experience. One of the best sports moments I've witnessed in person.

Tiger Slam

Mickelson's run at the same feat ending just shy of the 3rd leg in dramatic Trainwreck fashion on the 72nd hole of the US Open at Winged Foot a little over 5 years later was interesting as well.
