What's the deal with Brian Windhorst and LeBron James?

I actually think Brian Windhorst is pretty good but I've always wondered if they're friends or if Windy has just been riding LeBron's coattails for his entire career.
I know they went to the same high school but Windy went to ESPN when LeBron went to Miami and then moved to ESPN Cleveland when LeBron went back. Has anyone ever read anything about the dynamic there? Again, I don't know the specifics but it seems like Windhorst owes his entire career to LeBron.

Maybe they're on the down low?

Windhorst has stalked LeBron for nearly 20 years.
Honestly, I can't believe they put that guy on TV.

Windhorst attended high school in Akron, Ohio at St. Vincent–St. Mary High School, the same school that James would later attend,[1] and graduated from Kent State University with a degree in journalism in 2000. Windhorst began covering James during his high school playing career,[2] and began covering the Cavaliers in 2003, the year that James was drafted.[1] While James was the youngest player in the NBA, Windhorst was the youngest traveling NBA beat writer.[3] In 2007, he co-wrote The Franchise: LeBron James and the Remaking of the Cleveland Cavaliers with sports columnist Terry Pluto. His writing at The Plain Dealer was honored by the United States Basketball Writers Association for Best Game Story in 2009,[4] and by the Associated Press.

He was visibly upset when LeBron went back to Cleveland and he had no idea. So I doubt they're friends. But I'm sure lebron has used him to float stuff out there.
He said this the other day after the game, trying to see if LeBron had a limp (remember the awkward landing)

We should extend the MJ/LeBron debate to Ahmad Rashad vs Windhorst. Who got further in the media by being friendly with the GOAT candidate?

Wonder what happens to him when Lebron retires.
My guess is Lebron buys a team and Windy just covers that team.

Jealous?

Journalists make careers focusing on super stars. It's a savvy business move honestly, if they can get the scoops.
Jordan made a few journalists pretty damn famous. At points in his career, he would only talk to a few folks he trusted.

I think Lebron actually likes him lol. I read before that Windhorst’s mom was Lebron’s teacher back in high school and Windhorst is one of the few guys that Lebron can trust in the media.
Windhorst helped him when Lebron knocked up his future wife at 19 years old. Lebron’s management team was worried how it would effect his public image

The two of them stood under some bleachers. LeBron clearly was uncomfortable. "Let's not make this hard", Brian said. "You're about to become a father. Tell me how you feel."
"Excited", LeBron said, "but also a little nervous."
Brian asked him what he was going to name his first son.
"LeBron", LeBron said.
The story Brian wrote was about LeBron's excitement, and how he wanted to be a better dad than his own dad was for him.
After the birth of his son, LeBron returned to training camp, and all the other reporters asked him about it. They asked LeBron what he had named his son.
"Brian Windhorst James."
The reporters laughed. The odd response, Brian thought, was LeBron's way of thanking him for how he handled the situation.

Windhorst hands down. Ahmad Rashad was a 4x Pro Bowl WR and was married to Phylicia Rashad from The Cosby Show. He also had been covering the NFL for years before moving on to the NBA. Rashad would have still been a well-known, accomplished, connected individual without Jordan. Windhorst only got his job because he covered LeBron from the very beginning of his basketball career.

He saw an opportunity of a lifetime and jumped on it. I think a lot of people are just jealous TBH.

As he rose up from his locker just now, LeBron James spotted the world’s leading LeBron-ologist @WindhorstESPN studying his walk to see how well he was moving. “Looking to see if I’m limping?” James asked Windy with a smile. “Even if I was I wouldn’t show you.”
