I just recently started watching hockey as well. I'm a fan of the Blackhawks. Won a cup two years ago and pretty much have the same team and are fun to watch.
Sharks and Blues are fun to watch too.

Devils/Leafs/Wild
Generally, I have a preference for the Leafs as a whole, but Martin Brodeur is my favorite active player in hockey and has been a joy to watch for the last 20 years. They had to add the Brodeur Rule to change hockey-- and any time they add a rule because you change the game that much, its pretty awesome.
The Wild are my top 'sympathy rooting' interest team-- and it's good to have a team in the Western Conference to root for, if you catch the later evening hockey games on TV.

Doesn't the new fox sports New Orleans station show most of the Dallas Stars games?
If so, they may be a logical choice. Really good young player in Jamie Benn. An all-time great finishing up his career in Jaromir Jagr. Pretty damn good goalkeeper in Kari Lehtonen who is good enough to keep them in most games, even against the leagues best teams. So they'll probably be a fun team to watch all season even when they lose because they should be in a lot of close games (like last nights OT loss to Chicago).
They also have an outside chance to make the playoffs this season even if they aren't expected to. So it isnt like you'll be a bandwagon fan just jumping on a team everyone expects to win - Youll be rooting for a live underdog.
But you'll also have to put up with the rumors that they might be relocating in a few years, which is an obvious negative.

Since you're new to hockey most guys will give you a free pass on who your favorite team is as long as its not the Penguins, they are like the Miami Heat of Hockey.

You have to go with a member of "The Original 6".The Original six comprise The Colorado Avalanche and five teams you have never heard of. The Avalanche have also won 15 straight Stanley Cups and when they were the Quebec Nordiques a member of the team cured polio and scored a Hat Trick on the same day. Wayne Gretzky once scored 9 goals in a single period for The Avalanche but curiously was eclipsed a game later when Rocket Richard and Bobby Hull of The Avalanche both scored fourteen. Chicks will also dig you if you pull for the Avalanche because the very act of pulling for the aforementioned Avalanche will increase your testosterone dramatically. I'd go with The Colorado Avalanche.

The only team you need to go for is the Chicago Blackhawks. You're welcome.

Also consider this "Baloo" character carefully. This is a guy who voted twice for Barack Obama, owns a life-size Hillary Clinton inflatable Love Doll, considers a band called "The Dead Kennedys" to be among the greatest bands of all time, openly roots for teams from Calgary (apparently it's in northern Minnesota) and yet another from DC, and who is a known closet philatelist.
If one loves America, one pulls for The Colorado Avalanche. Do it, or the terrorists will have won.

The Montreal Canadiens. They are the best and most prestigious team in the NHL with 24 Stanley Cups by far the most of any team in the league. They also are in the best city in the NHL.
Go Habs!!!
Go Habs!!!

Indeed, the SHAME is strong with this one.

Question: Why are the Montreal Canadiens called the Habs?
Answer: Habs is an abbreviation of "les habitants," the informal name given to the original settlers of New France, dating back to the 17th Century. So it's a natural fit for the The Montreal Canadiens, established in 1909 and marketed as a French-Canadian hockey team.
Having said that, the nickname might have been the result of an error. According to NHL.com, the first man to refer to the team as "the Habs" was Tex Rickard, owner of Madison Square Garden, in 1924. Rickard apparently told a reporter that the "H" on the Canadiens' sweaters was for "Habitants." Not true. The distinctive C-wrapped-around-H logo stands for "Club de Hockey Canadien."

Sharks may just get over the hump this year.

And if you don't pull for The Avalanche, what would become of the children? Do it for the children. Because they are our future. And what kind of man calls himself a man and yet hates The Avalanche and children ?
