It allows shite like the last Giants Super Bowl win. It gives a second-chance to underperforming teams. It rewards failure.
But it takes out all bitching and complaining.

Must be a huge Peyton Manning fan.

I've never heard an answer from the perspective of a college football player. Would be interested to see what the actual players would prefer. Is playing the extra games a big deal to them? Or they dgaf?

It's kind of shocking you would rather the current system.

I don't like the current system either.

If football players and coaches would stop being bitches about playing too many games in too short a time, the best set-up would be something akin to the old European soccer system.

16 teams. Bowls f'ing suck. Only toothless hillbilly CFB fans like bowls. Playoffs are where it's at.

I don't know how you could be against a playoff in any sport. It matches the best teams against each other to determine who is the best.

Last sentence is debatable (especially in a single-elimination, large field). A playoff utilizes transitive property which is pretty stupid. And everyone knows transitive property in sports is stupid, but people are for some reason okay with it when the word "playoff" is used.

That's why I like four teams. You have to be elite to get in, and if you win it, you know you beat two other elite teams for sure.

8 teams - will give the teams that have a good shot to take down a #1 an equal opportunity. I think we can all agree that teams like tOSU and ND continually get love b/c of their history (and schedule of playing no one significant) while *some* 2 loss teams are clearly better - even with two losses.

There is still too much bias with only 4 teams IMO.

i wouldnt mind 8 but I think 6 would be good. Each conference gets a winner then an "at large" team gets in.

It will really depend on how the committee ends up picking the teams

A 16 team playoff would take ALL of the fun out of the regular season. All of it. It would become the NFL with teams resting starters late in the season.

A 4 team playoff is perfect.

Teams only play in-conference. A champion is chosen for each conference. Conference champions then play each other.

It (a) makes conference championships meaningful and (b) ensures that failure isn't rewarded.

But only a handful on conferences are relevant. Most are full of dogshit.

Your idea is perfect

I wouldnt mind the current format if the kept the bcs standings and chose the top 4 teams that way. Im wary of a committee.

Team A wins every game in the regular season.

Team B never plays Team A.

Team A loses to Team C in a playoff game and are eliminated.

Team B beats Team C and is named champion.

Ah, I gotcha.

Well don't lose.

I like the definitive nature of the playoffs. Lose and you're out. No bitching involved. Can't blame your failures on anyone or anything else.

So, in your mind, the NFL playoff system is more definitive than the EPL?

ETA: Let's use another example.

This past season, in the Rugby Championship (second-tier of English rugby), Bristol won the league (every team plays each team twice, one home, one away) with 96 points to London Welsh's 88. In order to decide who gets promoted to the English top-tier, English rugby added a playoff. In the playoff, London Welsh beat Bristol and were promoted. Is that fair? Definitive?

Fair and definitive are two separate things. Definitive? Absolutely. Fair? Sure. They beat the team with more points. How can you bitch when you had a chance to win but didn't?

The EPL is the best system, but there are just way too many teams in college (and NFL) for it to work out. It'd actually be a pretty good system I think for MLB, NBA and NHL.

I'm also kind of a hypocrite because I LOVE the Stanley Cup playoffs, even though it's not the best way to find a champion. But sports really aren't important in the grand scheme of things; they're entertainment, so I'm cool with it.
